88 Carrera Cabriolet Rear Window

I have my original top on my car in mint condition except for a few stitches on the rear window. I gather from age, the thread on the stitches that hold the plastic window in, have dried up and are starting to split.
Has anyone here had this problem?
I was thinking about using an Awl to re stitch in the original holes where the thread is breaking. If I open the top a little and bring it back a little I can re align the holes.
A local top shop wants to remove the top and I do not think that it will go back correctly.
I was hoping that someone here had a fix for this.

Thanks
Jack
