I was able to drive the Autobahn for 7+ years plus several trips back to Germany since then. Someone once wrote that "there is nothing quite like driving the Autobahn at sunrise in an automobile capable of driving at high speeds." How very true.

it has changed much..
it's gotten much slower..stau and roadwork.. now one must leave early or run late.. IMO the avg. American woman driver.. would last about 5 minutes... many men talk about it.. but Hertz and other rental co's.. pick up drivers not far from the airport all day long.. folks drive in Europe.. we watch videos/nav screens while chating on the cell.. National Geographic, and the History Channel have both aired two exemplary videos on this subject. Gerry This was our factory delivery in '86. ![]()

Sabre - thanks for the link.
I just got back from a business trip (Frankfurt am Main - Rastatt - Heidelberg - Darmstadt - Würzburg - Igersheim - Linz - München) and the autobahn was an interesting mix of construction, traffic (esp. trucks heading east), and open road. Unfortunately, the rental I was in was not a stellar open road vehicle, but it was entertaining nonetheless. It's nice to be able to steadily cruise at a comfortable 120 - 145 kph (75 - 90 mph) without fear of a speeding ticket. I did see a few of "our" 911's on the road, including a pristine red 3.2 on the roads outside Linz, Österrreich. It made me immediately start wishing I had mine with me. Great photo! Do you have any others from when you picked up the car at the factory?

I do, about 75-100, including the factory, Weissach, and the 959 assembly line. My self assigned task for next week is to A/D the pics/slides which, have been in storage for many years. Sadly, the factory no longer permits photos inside the factory. A few years ago, they called in "Der Polizei" because a tourist was taking pictures from the sidewalk. The factory was advised that it was "fair game". Also, according to a recent conversation with the factory rep (last month), the Weissach tours have been discontinued. And thanks for the compliment on the pic. I pre-focused the camera, and took the pic while driving. The others, although @ 160, are a bit blury. My wife still has a lot to say about this. Thanks, Gerry you may pm me.

...I was lucky enough to drive with a close friend in '03 when he picked up his 996 C4S. We went again in '07 to pick up his dad's 997 Carrera S (actually got video at 274 km/h in that one). This pic is right after we left the '03 24 Hours of LeMans to bring the car back to Stuttgart for exporting back home. Amazing driving experience to look back on.

There are a few sections where it still gets used as it should (this is from my recent trip over - we suspect the guy came over from Switzerland just to drive, and rapidly!): ![]() |
