87 Carrera / Oil Cooler Thermo Switch

My 87 Targa was equipped with an oil cooler fan from factory, the thermo Switch activates fan at 248F, way too hot.

I just ordered a replacement, has anyone replaced this thermo switch.

Can you replace switch without removing the entire oil cooler and fan?

there's lots of info on this if you haven't done a search yet. I haven't replaced mine yet, but plan to in the near future.

1) IIRC, there is a BMW thermo switch that is practically identical, and activates at 210 degrees.
2) you will need to remove the entire oil cooler and fan.

I purchased the switch...two of them...They have one 195 Degree or 210 Degree. No sure which one I want to use yet.

I am getting mixed feedback on the install...Some say if you have skinny arms removal of oil cooler is not necessary...

Anyone have any experience changing this part, maybe pictures?

Hot car, running hot on hot days or during hot laps

I was having the same issue, on the 405 (Los Angeles) on my way to LAX. And at or and on hot days in lines waiting my turn at AutoX events. Normally during at a average driving speed it was not a big issue, I would see 210 maybe. So, I had my ******** (Schneider's in Santa Barbara) add a inline manual switch off the hot from the key. If I think it's becoming an issue, I just flip the switch @ say 180 or so. I am planning on lowering the motor and cleaning out the oil cooler from above. When we pulled the fan, and viewed it on the scope we could see that years of "Cean Calif. Air & Dust" flowing around inside the motor tin has not been good for the cooling fins.
Keep Cool on hot days!
