Instrument lighting

I have had several problems with the electrics, the latest is that the instrument lighting will not come on with the headlight switch...however, when I turn on the fog lights the instrument lights come on. The turn signals have been intermittent as well. sometimes they work and sometimes not. Coincidence?

The first thing you usually do is check & clean your ground contacts. Sometimes that does wonders for problems you thought were complicated. Have fun.

Check your grounds. Typically when something works through the wrong switch it means that by operating that switch you've completed the circuit that was broken by the bad ground.

Uhmmm, I hesitate to suggest this, but... I once spent about 80 minutes (after I thought I'd finished working on the car) trying to figure out why the instrument lights didn't work. Gave up, put the instruments back into the dash, switched the lights on to pull out and they worked..

Turns out there was a "dead" spot in the instrument light dimmer - in one particular position, they don't light up at all for me...

John,

You didn't mention what year your car is. Remember that the gauge lighting is an un-fused circuit on early cars and prone to problems. Installation of a fuse can safe guard while troubleshooting and beyond.

It's a 1970 911, that has been modified by PO. I may just rewire the whole lighting system.

Lights.

Upon resolution of your current issue, you should fuse your dash lights along with other items.

Please see my post-added fuses and relays.

Good luck,

Gerry
