floor defrost switch

Here's one for ya! 1981 911sc
On the floor between the seats there is a lighted switch that says "Defrost off/on" The light in the switch works fine but the switch does nothing. I've never been able to figure out what this switch does. Anyone know?
Tx!john

Is it a toggle switch, or a rotary switch with numbers?

It's a toggle switch. It's square.

I always thought that is was to tell you to pull the heat levers up for defrost and nothing more. Is yours really a switch? On my Carrera the only wires under that plastic square are for the light...

It shouldn't be a switch. It's just an indicator light showing how to operate the defrost with the heater levers, as Jean Paul said.

you are right! It's not a switch. It's like you said, it's wired for a light only. I can't believe that the Porsche people feel we couldn't find the levers.
Tanks!

when and how is this light supposed to work? mine is dark, though I've replaced the bulb (I admit that I haven't put a voltmeter on it yet to check for current).

am I correct in assuming that it should go on when the headlights are on?

TIA

Steve - the light comes on when the headlights (parking lights) are turned on. It is on regardless of the postion of the heat levers. Think of it as no different than the lights in your gauges.
