Torque and Clean Threads?
Hey All -
I am in the process of replacing my Flywheel. I cleaned the area behind the flywheel with Degreaser and I believe it has left a bit of a "protective film" in the area. Do I need to be 100% sure that none remains in the threads for the Flywheel bolts? I was reading a very extensive CV Bolt replacement thread and the difference in "holding power" when the threads were contaminated with grease was huge. Is the case the same with any contaminant?

Hi

As long as you're there and have access to the threads, I would suggest you clean them out, it could only help.

Thanks for the reply.
In hindsight, seems pretty obvious. But hey I'm a new novice mechanic!

I'm quite novice as well. Recently put the whole shebang together and found out re-using the bolts to be a big no-no. Had to re-drop the motor only to buy the $100 worth of stretch bolts and re-torque.

On the SC-crank, there are 9 bolts holding the flywheel; but earlier models have only 6 bolts.
These are stretch-bolts and the recommendation is to use them only once. For street-driving, myself, and others, have repeatedly re-used these bolts because, IMHO, 9 bolts @ ~60 ft-lbs will hold the flywheel securely without breaking. Rod bolts are also strech-type and these can only be used once. CV flange bolts need to be checked periodically regardless of how they're fastened or whether there is grease in the threads. It's impossible to keep them grease-free. Mine have had grease on them for years but I check and retighten them now and then.
