Yikes, fire in the intake.

I started my '70 911E today and it started very poorly, I checked under the hood and the intake was extremely hot on the pass. side, turned the engine off and got my extinguisher, wasn't sure what to do, the smoke wafting from the intake stopped, I took out the filter, which was slightly scortched. I removed the fuse to the cold start solenoid and restarted, everything was fine, have you guys experienced this? I'm thinking I should put a demand switch on the solenoid to use manually. Could this be something else? thanks, Rick.

the best way to extinguish a stack fire is to keep the engine running so the fire gets sucked in. it's rather common with the crude cold start system MFI engines have. works on carbs too.

The later cars used plastic stacks which squirt the fuel directly into the stacks. On the magnesium stacks, the fuel just goes into the airbox. Yes, it is a crude system asking for a fire. There are many people who are happy with a manual switch on the dash to activate the cold start system. I am not sure of the orientation of the nozzles, but make sure they are aimed at the stacks. That is about all you can do other than switching to the plastic stacks.
