Tachometer in 71 - Sparatic Movement

I've read many posts about tachs failing to all sorts of reasons on the forum and most say send it to have it repaired... Mine was working just fine recently until I tried installing a Pertronix system - that eventually found out was incorrect application and had to go back to points... but thats another story.

However, related to the installation of the Pertronix before realizing it was incorrect the wire that plugs onto the points side of the dizzy was temporarily connected to both sides of the Coil + and - for test purposes individually ( dumb move ) , started up, and since has been completely crazy. Im thinking this probably "ruined" the tach. It stays at 0 until given accel and is then very sparatic. Any ideas to move me into the right direction of troubleshooting before "sending it out".

Thanks in Advance!

Thanks, could not figure out what 'sparatic' meant.
