915 or G50?
The synchros in the tranny of my '83 SC are all trashed. Can I swap a later tranny into it's place or is a rebuilt unit the best replacement?
Thanks, Lance |

It's not a simple tranny swap to convert it. I suggest you look through a few of the threads in the following link and get the details. It's going to be thousands of dollars less to just rebuild your 915.

You're right, more work and $$ than needed, I'll fix the 915 tranny.
Thanks! Lance |

Get it fixed, and while you are at it get a Wevo Gateshift and short shifter - that's my plan, when 3rd and 4th get as bad as 2nd.

Fix the 915....
Properly set-up, it's a nice box. I just added a Rennshift to my almost 200k mile SC 915 and I'm very happy. I'd imagine a Wevo is similar.
My 1-2 shift which was a bit dicey before (into 2nd) is perfect, and my downshift from 5th to 4th is is perfect as well - before I would nick reverse, I usually braked and went to 3rd. Heck, it now shifts better in 1-2 than the Getrag in my 30k mile e46 M3! Oh, and my 915 now (IMO) shifts better than the few G50 box cars I've driven ('88/'92/'93). I recently picked up a spare '77 mag/alum hybrid 915/61 and plan on trying to find some good short ratio gears for #3 through #5. I plan to have it rebuilt and ready for when my original 915/63 goes bad - hopefully John Walker will still be working on these when I get around to it. Try to pick up a "cheap" G50 and tweak it for performance - G boxes and "cheap" don't go together! Last edited by G450X; 08-02-2010 at 08:14 AM.. Reason: added G50 vs 915 driving comments |

Count me as a guy who prefers the 915 to the G50. Nothing wrong with the G50 of course, but it's 50 lbs heavier and if the 915 is set up right it feels and shifts just as good...and there's no goofy hydro clutch to worry about.
