Tax value what do i do?

My county just billed me at $23,500 value for my 1975 911s. It has worn paint and is far from a $23000 car. Checked NADA and they said it was worth that. How can this be i paid under $10000 last year. I probably could not sell it for $8000 at this point.

You can probably file an appeal, might have to have an appraisal of some sort. Not familiar with NC law so I'm virtually only good for outhouse advice.

Scott is right: you need a professional appraiser that truly knows 911's. I'd start by looking through Excellence Magazine for the mid-year 911 buyer's guide as well as current Panorama's for pricing. Your car should be valued somewhere between $7K and $10K. $23K is what an average (or less) Carrera would go for.

Robotman, I just successfully concluded an appeal to a large, urban NC county tax collector. My appeal was based upon a written appeal with a friendly short cover letter mailed to the agency containing 5 photos of my 911, and compared it to 4 similar 911's I pulled from the internet(including local Craig's list) that I thought seemed comparable, with attached photos of each comparable and the subject vehicle. I drew a conclusion from the data that suggested our car was worth X as compared to the County's value of Y(which was wildly inflated) because of the condition of the subject's paint, interior, etc. as compared to each comp. The result was the assessed value was reduced by 1/3. This may take a while, as I appealed last March, and just this week got the letter from the County. In your case, the $10,000 you just paid should be strongly mentioned. Say the collector market is down, etc. The appeal process and address of the agency should be on the tax notice you already have. You must pay the full assessed tax, then appeal. Good luck.

That's freaking insane. I could barely get an auto appraiser to appraise my '79 930 at that and it 'looked' pristine.

Maybe your county assessor would buy my '88 for 23K. He'd be stealing it, right?

They only gave me 30 days to appeal, the cars on jack stands with the front torn out of it and my computer crashed with all my pics so i dont have any pictures before i tore it apart. This pisses me off.

Has a single 75 911 sold for that price? My unprofessional opinion is that the appeal should be rather simple if you have comparable's. Forget that its torn apart. Just see if you can get it down to what other similar mileage and condition 911's of that year sold for. Not sure but you could probably have a couple shops write an estimate range for you that won't be even close to their estimate.

Out of curiosity, what is the tax burden for the car at the appraised value? Also, is this a Personal property tax? just wondering.. if the car is on stands, with work being done, would it be registered? ie, how did they know you owned the car?

I would argue that a car in parts on jack stands represents even lower value than a driving car. You bought it for 10K. It broke. Now it doesn't run. Value = less than 10k. Good luck! Larry

Can't you check NADA guides or something; that's what lenders use? Everything in EXCELLENCE is inflated. Get a professional appraiser maybe? Craigslist or ebay 'SOLD' listings?

Opps, made a mistake on my posting, the county has the Targa valued at $4,810 For 2009 it was value at $4,900 It is a personal property tax and the county uses their own depreciation rate to assess the value of the vehicle on an annual basis. For Johnston county you have 30 days to appeal the value Johnston County - Johnston County Planning Department 6. Vehicle Value: All licensed vehicles are valued annually as of January 1 of the year the taxes are due at current market value. • Appeals: The value of the vehicle may be appealed to Johnston County within 30 days after the billing date which appears on the front of your bill. Not withstanding N.C.G.S. 105-312 (d) an owner who appeals the appraised value of a classified motor vehicle shall pay the tax on the vehicle when due, subject to a full or partial refund pending the outcome of the appeal. Interest will accrue on unpaid amounts. *Note: For Property Tax purposes, licensed Motor Vehicles are not valued at wholesale, blue book, private party asking price (such as sales between private buyers and sellers) or internet valuation lookup websites.

So how do they give a valuation on the vehicle? It sits on jackstands with the front tore off, so I think it should be considered a non-op vehicle. Perhaps if you are a PCA member, you can use their valuation service.

I would ask them how they value vehicles 35 years old, by then most of them have very little "tax value" My old 73 VW Thing was valued at $500 and 95 Jetta $1,500 PCA valuation service will probaly increase the taxable value;-) How long have you had the car? Do you have the bill of sale?
