Good day/Sad day - new 911 owner

Hi Guys,

Today i registered and insured my dad's 74 911, his original, beloved car. Dad passed last month and we just finished his memorial and burial. He was an engineer, and my very best sales job was to convince my dad that he ought to drive a Porsche. He was a chevy man, we inherited a few bucks and at 18 i bought a used 911, then a speedster, then a 914 auto xer. he rode inthem all then relented and bought a 68 911t. My step mom totaled it, (and is ok), then he bought this 74 Sepia brown 911, new and it has been his baby ever since.

Dad passed and the car has come to me and i am a bit melancholy tonight.

I have read, with great interest, many of the Technical posts in the 911 section and am contemplating the continued maintenance and minor upgrades to this old beauty.

I have a bit of experience with webers but none with CIS, so i am looking for recommendations for CIS maintenance books and a god general manual, (chilton, Clymer, Hanes / Factory shop manual copy???).

I look forward to discussions with members and maintaining the car fairly close to stock. I will take out my excess energy with "the green car" and think of dad as i continue driving with the 911 spirit.

Thanks for listening,
chris

Beautiful car and beautiful story. I wouldn't change a thing other than the registration and license plate stickers once a year.

Thanks,
Mark

Truly sorry to hear about your dad. It is a beautiful car, and in a wonderful color. I know you will always remember your dad when you see it. So many people have these disposable machines they drive--to have a car like this, with the history, and the beauty...don't ever sell her.

Touching story. It is great you convinced him to do that and that he enjoyed it. All the best.

Here is a recent thread that you can review. best repair manual for a rookie to buy???

I like this book for CIS Amazon.com: Bosch Fuel Injection and Engine Management (9780837603001): Charles O. Probst: Books

You can probably get most of the info you will ever need in this website.

Amazing car and amazing story. You're fortunate to have such a nice memory of your dad in the form of your 911. I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

Great story. Sorry for your loss.
You've found THE place that can help you with your quest.
The Bentley manual and this site will be able to keep your dads car in tip top shape.
Best of luck with it.

Chris, very sorry for your loss. I just lost my dad on 7/1 so I can relate to your feelings. Beautiful car. Hopefully it will continue to bring you good memories of your father.

Chris,
I'm with you. Lost my dad in May and got his 911. When I am really missing him (which is a lot still) I go for a drive and pop in one of his old Beach Boys tapes. It does the trick every time. Hang in there and I am sorry for your loss.

Chris,
Sorry for your loss. The CIS is pretty simple, reminds me of aircraft F/I. Make sure all your components are installed and functioning correctly and there are just 2 basic adjustments for the shade tree mech. Idle and fuel mixture, you can get deeper, but if its running close to decent, minor tuning willmsuffice. I chronicled some of my experiences with my 1975 911S and it's CIS system. The stuff actually makes sense, I have the FSM, and a couple of others too. The search function here will provide lots of info.
Good luck and enjoy.
Eric

That car looks amazing in brown.
I imagine that the car will look this great after years in your care.
Your dad must have looked after it well.
Drive it and remember him.

Your loss will never be replaced - but you something that meant something to him & that does bring a smile to your face even when you feel that little empty.

the car looks great!!!!

Thanks

Thank you Gents for your kind words & support. I look forward to driving his/my 911, keeping it maintained and planning for the repairs, improvements.

One of the first tasks will be to build a carport to shelter the car - it gets a bit wet, (50+ inches of rain / year).

Thanks again, I also look forward to reading your posts & building my understanding of the Good Doctor's cars.

Hey,

I feel ya. I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I, too, am the proud owner of a 911 that my father used to own. It's an 81 sc targa. I've spent the las year amassing parts on this board in order to bring it up to a level that my dad would be proud of, and that he never got a chance to do.

I'm only three parts away now.

Enjoy the car.

Michael

Great story. Sorry for your loss. Your memories of your Dad and his p-car will be with you always. Made me think about which of my kids should get mine.

Enjoy and always remember.
