accepted deck height of a 2.7?
Hello all. What is preferred in terms of deck height? I did a mock-up assy. on #1 and #4 cylinders today to measure deck height.
With a .010 barrel shim, #1 had .030 and #4 had .035 thou of deck height. What is everyone's opinion? Aase brothers racing told me to achieve .040 and dont worry about it. Also, what is acceptable intermediate shaft backlash? Mine has nearly .005 thou of lash. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks again. Happy New Year!!!! Chris |

When I rebuilt my 2.7 I was told by a very experienced Porsche Wrench to have .75 to 1.0 mm. Seems to have been good advice.

Hi:
.035 to .040 deck height is fine. Due to rod length variations and barrel height tolerances, I always check ALL cylinders and set each one so that each hole will have the same compression ratio. |

You should make sure two dimensions are in the ballpark: the deck height and the cylinder height. Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing; deck height is the distance between the top of the piston (at TDC) and the top of the cylinder barrel. Cylinder height is the installed height of the cylinder barrel, measured from the shoulder of the barrel where it mates against the crankcase to the top of the cylinder.
If you adjust cylinder height with shims to match individual deck heights, the cylinders may not be evenly clamped by the head studs. Sherwood Lee http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |
