Due to my lack of experience, I would like to hear from more experienced members, whether I should replace the hole door locking posts or just restore them with some clean metal sheet...

Concerning the windshield corners, it seems quite obvious to me that I should replace with new Windshield Post Cowl Repair Panels.... but I would accepts different opinions...!!

looks like you have your option to rally it .........

if you want it go for it .......... best of luck ......

Alex
in this case what i would do is buy the repair panels and cut back to good metal and just use what you need from the panels. This way you wont have to try and bend and fab all the angles. i would cut out rust first then buy the parts you know you cant make.

cheers ed

AlexJ 08-09-2010 02:40 AM

Thank you for your opinion!
I was just trying to save some budget avoiding buying new panels... :)
Now seriously, it sounds like the best decision...

Rust

Alex, I had the same and even more rust problems. Yes I did my own restoration and my only advice would be, find as many as possible replacement panels. made my own windshield corners and I would say, never again. replacement panels are the way to go.

check you rocker panels. I have a bore-scope and using that I seen what's inside those hidden places.

Even on a truck, the car looks beautiful!

Here are the pictures that were missing of the 911 arriving to its new home

more developments

Hi all!

The last couple of days I have been preparing the car to go to the body-shop.
I finally arranged a good deal for body repair (fortunately in the island we have very cheap labor costs) and as I decided to buy new replacement panels for most of the rust issues, I'll get some cost reduction... not speaking that I am already doing many things like disassembling, cleaning, etc.

Dash board removed, (really a bad job!!!but I've had worse...), all the trim details, carpets, rear seats, gauges (prefer to avoid surprises coming from the atmosphere at the body-shop!), hood removed.

Some pictures:

Before building any rally car you need to decide what type of event you are going to do and what class you are going to run in. For instance I used to do the British Historic Championship, in these events the car has to be run in exactly the same state of tune as it did in period.

Of course with modern safety equipment, but it did limit the amount of strengthening you could do on the car.

If you decide to run the car in events with modern cars then you have alot more freedom.

The reason you need to decide this is that it will give you a different direction for the body shell preparation.

I know of three excellent preparation compaines for the 911, the first is Francis Tuthill and has already been mentioned on this thread, the second is Prepfab who ran JimmY McRae in the British championship and the third is XS Racing who ran steve Perez's 911 when he won the championship.

Certainly the Prepfab website can give you info on how they prepare the car.

Hi jimrs2000

There must have been a misunderstood caused by the topic sequence...

In fact, my first topic was about a car I found in order to build a rally car.

During my search, and after hearing the wise advices from the Pelican members, I found this SC.

After my first check on the car, after I bought it, I decided this car was in good shape and complete that I would better restore it to stock condition.

The rally car will have to wait till the next project, I hope!

By the way, when I was about to buy the previous car, I have been doing some search on body preparation I decided Prefab!

jimrs2000 08-11-2010 03:36 PM

Sorry my confusion, I get very excited when I see someone potentially building a rally car!!!

I know Richard who runs Prepfab very well so feel free to mention my name if you ever contact him, I will be back in the UK for the Roger Albert Clark Rally in November and will be seeing him then.

Did you know they have just opened a place in france? A little closer to you.

I am thinking of building an SC rally car myself.......we shall see!

ZAMIRZ 08-11-2010 03:49 PM

Alex,

Good luck with the rust repair, looks like she's going to need a lot of help.

My interior is identical to yours, but some of my pieces are old and faded. I don't want to be rude, but if you're looking at changing out the interior to a different color, PLEASE let me know. I would be interested in purchasing some of the parts.

Thank you. Hope the rally project doesn't take to long to start... and I will contact Richard for sure!

An SC RS you are going to build? That is one of the best. My preference as well... but really difficult project... maybe one day!

You not being rude! I just felt that interior don't fit my expectations about this car, so when I started to clean it and noticed it was blue, I became a bit disappointed.

But, in fact, I am starting to like it... and now, because there are a lot of bits I would have to change (door trim, center console, roof liner, etc), I decided to keep it blue, removing the Grey cloth from the seats, changing it for full blue vinyl.

If you need the Grey cloth parts, I can ask the person that will build the seats, to remove the old parts carefully and I can send it to you for free.

At the same time, if you want something new, here is the e-mail of a company in Germany that claims to have OEM vinyl and cloth from Porsche:

mailto:info@cartex.de

They have many things, but they don't have the blue vinyl I am looking for.

If anyone knows a supplier, please let me know - preferably in Europe.

By the way, ZAMIRZ, do you know your car's interior code (and description)??
I have been searching for that and cannot identify it... specially the blue vinyl, which is what i am looking for... I've found "dark blue", "marine blue", but still not sure what it is...

ZAMIRZ 08-12-2010 01:06 AM

Alex,

Funny you mention, I did the same thing to my grey cloth inserts, changed them out for blue vinyl. :) But, thanks for the offer.

We have a great supplier here in Los Angeles for all kinds of interior materials for German cars and use them often. They're called GAHH, and when you select your car year/make/model, the code for our interior is 920 Navy.

Anyway, good luck with the project!

Finally got the code!!!

Thank you ZAMIRZ!!!

If you have any photos from your interior, please send it to my e-mail: alexj@netmadeira.com
If you prefer, post it here - I really would like to see how the car looks without that grey cloth...

Thank you ZAMIRZ, your information was precious! I will contact GAHH immediately!

I know your changing out some of the infected panels, but for the areas that you are going to repair w/ lighter rust, there is a product made by SEM called rust seal which works great.
