Great work Alex, glad to hear that your keeping the car original. I can't wait to see it finished (sub'd).

We've seen a few pictures of what your body shop did with rust repair, but it really isn't quite enough to know the quality of the work. In one early picture I saw what might have been fiberglass? in addition to some tack welds. If that's the case, that's a pretty negative thing. If I'm wrong and it was some other filler or primer, maybe no big deal. Also, it looked like the area they cut out of the door lockpost didn't get all of the rust. What about the bit in the top of the rear right fender behind the lockpost? And I can't tell from that picture, but did they weld the patch panel in, or do something else? It didn't look flush. Are there particular aspects of the repair job (appearance, price) which are bothering you about the car? |
Hi, preston_brown
Thanks for your words. No, it is not fiberglass. i didn't use it at all. All the panels were cut to its appropriate size in oder not to change the hole piece. When it was not necessary, rusty holes were cut over the rusty area and filled with welding or metal sheet. The place that you refereed was rebuild to have the lip that bends over the door lock post. Yes, the patch panel was fully welded. Until now, nothing is bodering me (unless the rockers that should have been opened) - I was just looking for a different perspective from more experienced people. In my opinion, until now, a good work has been done. |
Looks good then, I wouldn't worry. Enjoy your restored car.

Ok then... Thanks!

Today was a very important day:
I finally received the roll-cage for my rally project - soon at a Pelican's thread near you! :) - very nice quality! Thanks Mr. Flavell! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303857410.jpg Regarding this project: finally some paint on it!!! Big party today in my house! Some bad quality photos taken in my mobile, but good enough to make me proud! In my humble opinion the guys did a great job at the body shop!! Credits to them! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303856879.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303856898.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303856924.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303856946.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303856970.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303856995.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303857030.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1303857056.jpg |

while the car looks pretty good based on the photographs, i'm amazed/astounded/horrified that it took thirteen months for your body shop to finish your car.

Hi Alex,
I have followed your progress for the last year. The paint is intoxicating. Take your time re-assembling the car. How often do you get to the Mainland? Does Africa count as the Mainland? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315540299.jpg |

For you to have an idea how hard it is, it took me almost a year to find a workshop to accept my other project (911 T/R recreation). Many of them will on this cars at the more quiet periods on they shops. |

We at the island have a very big connection to the mainland (80% of the students that decide to go to the university, go to mainland's), and our local airport has an average of 4 daily connections (around 150 PAX each) to the main Portuguese cities. |
Thank you all for your nice coments.
I expect in a week or two to have updated photos from the engine... or from the interiors... I will have to decide because I can't do both at the same time... |

I have been to Vigo on a business trip so I was very close to Portugal but never entered the country. Keep up the good work on the car! It will be beautiful. All the best. |

Years ago, I used to work for a guy who was from the Azores, Portugal, in the upper left corner of that map. It's kind of funny, Tony would said that it's almost as close to Canada as it is to mainland Portugal. He wasn't that far off - it's way in the middle of the Atlantic. From what he would tell us, it is quite beautiful. Your pictures suggest that Madeira is no slouch, either. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315540299.jpg |
Yes, it is a very small place in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean (like Azores, but they have 9 islands and the weather is not so good as here - the only advantage from being so close to Africa), but it is nice, quite, secure and with a good living standard...
Yes, some lack of resources but it is a question of getting use to it... we learn to ignore the difference between 3 months and 13 months... :D |
