Do I have a charging problem ??
Back in October my rebuilt Alternator started to overcharge my battery. Sent it out for repairs again and re installed this weekend.
Here is my question - The Battery reads 13.8v across the terminals with the car off. When I start the car I get a reading of 16.2v across the battery. Am I in range…? Appears high to me But the starting point of 13.8v also seems high BTW its an 84 911

Check your multimeter out on another battery. If it is reading ok, then you still have an overcharging problem on your car. With car off you should get a reading of 12.5-13 volts max. With car running, anything over 14.5 volts is overcharging the battery.

Joe,
If you are seeing anything over 14.5-14.7 in the system, your regulator (or something in the system) has caused the regulator to go full tilt and overcharge. Remember that the DME computer is a very expensive piece of equipment and does not like voltage spikes or overvoltage. Agree with Kurt and make sure that your VOM is giving you the right info. Take measurements with a digital volt ohm meter and go from there, but if its over 14.7 then do not drive the car until its corrected. Had the same thing happen with my alternator and the regulator was shorting out when it got hot and going full tilt charge up to 16.2 volts from time to time. JoeA

Maybe you guys are right about having a problem with the Volt meter.... It is a Digital meter.... I will check a couple of other batteries in my other cars and see see what I get for readings.... Maybe I will put new batteries in the Volt Meter.
