Brake Squeel on a 1987 911
Hi All,
A good friend of mine had new brakes put on his 87 911 but he has a brake squeal when he is slowing down. The mechanic can't rid the car of it. Can someone give me a suggestion to pass on to him to help him get rid of it? Since I redid my whole brake system, from all of the help here, I am able to use my Carrera again and it is as good as any Porsche mechanic could have done. I have owned the car since new and the brakes feel like they did when I bought the car. I will be using it this year, as an 88 911 Carrera Cabriolet with 15k original miles should hit 20k by the end of this summer, now safely. Thanks All, Jack Miller 1988 911 Carrera Cabriolet |

Yeah.... he should learn how to do it himself...so he doesn't re-open up mechanical work don by "others" ( even so called "pros")...and say.. "WHAT THE ...."
Take the brake pads out and inspect. Don't use the anti-squeel goop that is available at your FLAPS...as it tends to get gummy and pull out dust seals. If all looks in order...take a file and put a "Small" 45 degree "edge" on all sides. Not big, just a small chamfer edge. Make sure the brake "puck" is also in the proper 20 degree orientation...also easy but maybe do a search. Good luck.....very satisfying low-effor job....and he and his car will "bond" better. Guaranteed then for the car never to break down in abject adminration for a doting owner... ![]() ![]()

Pelican does sell the adhesive stick on pads that may help unti they wear through. I agree, the goop is terrible.

I have purchased a silver-polymer-aluminum product from those people that have a "Help" line of generic pieces ( wind-up handles and such), and this had a self-adhesive. This stuff worked well too for applications that would otherwise squeel, but it was done in concert with chamfering the edges of the pad....

I definitely agree on ensuring that your tech used the correct pads.
I just replaced my rear pads as they too were squealing, particularly after a 'vigorous' drive which would drive me nuts. I initially thought that I had sticking callipers but when I had a look realised the PO used the wrong pads. I bought the OEM Textar pads off out host with new retaining springs/pins and also used the adhesive pads. No probs, all working perfectly now........and quiet as a mouse! |

Oh Oh,
I screwed up. My buddy has 2 Porsches. The brake squeal is on his 1997 993 not his 87. How different is that system? Should he still have the pad metal shaved a bit? Thanks Jack My buddy wanted to send out a thanks to all for helping. He wanted to say that he wishes that he had the time to do this but he is an eye surgeon and has no time to breathe. So he has to farm it out. |

The 4 puck of the 993 will be much more prone to squeel than the 2 puck 87. Try all the tricks to silence these...45 degree edges, anti-squeel backing plates.......

+1 - Use the right pads - I swapped mine out for exactly that reason and presto! squeal gone, plus my wear sensor was operable again
