Rebuild - no start. Leaning toward ignition issue

77 2.7 CIS - No mods.

Just finished the garage top-end rebuild and engine back in. BUT will not start.

Cranking and getting gas.

No spark. I do not hear any whine in the CDI. CDI is original. Before I jump to the conclusion that CDI is the culprit, I wanted to hear any thoughts from the experts on possible reasons why the CDI just happened to go bad. Seems too coincidental. What could lead to the CDI just not "turning on". Is there a connection or missed ground that could interfere that I missed.

HISTORY Prior to rebuild.

Very hard starter.
Bad smoker.
When I did get it started, would only idle if accelerator is feathered.
If accelerator is depressed, engine choked out.

What I found and did during rebuild:
Replaced rings.
Rebuilt/Machined heads.
replaced airbox gasket which had disintegrated and was gone.
replaced fuel distributor o-ring.
cleaned out idle adjustment port with carb cleaner.
Added pop-off valve.
replaced injector o-rings.
Non essential: Removed and reinstalled the alternator so that fan and shroud can be painted.

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR COMMENTS.

JMHO, but you need to check all of your wiring and connectors. Make sure everything is clean, shiny & bright so there is no oxidation or corrosion at any connection.

Those original Permadooms were not well known for reliability but I would make sure it has battery voltage when the key is on before condemning it.

permatune is crap. might as well put in an MSD CD and coil.

check for power to the CD with the key on. put a sparkplug on one of the wires to check for spark.

since you did a rebuild, you may have to "play" with the sensor plate to get it started. have someone start the car while you move the sensor plate up and down, this will simulate changing the fuel mixture. once started, if you have to push up on the sensor plate, the mixture is lean. this is assuming your control pressures are correct.
but check for spark first, then move to fuel. we can go through fuel related isuues more if that turns out to be an issue.

did you connect the ground from the tranny to the body?

UPDATE:

Cleaned the CD contact points and wiring contacts. Got it to start. Smoked a bit at first but improved. Ran (10 mins) at high idle then quit all of a sudden. While running I tried to run the idle down by tightening the idle adjust but made no difference - still ran around 2000 rpm.

Won't restart. Sounds like it wants to kick-off but doesn't. New problem?
