1977 911S The clock works!!!!!!!!but nothing else does???

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello-

I'm new to this disease, but I was pretty sick before I got here. Thanks for reading this and I appreciate everyones advice in advance.

I stumbled upon this car and couldn't resist it. A CA car very manageable rust.
A 1977 911S Targa. I just love the chrome trim of this mid year, the 16" blacked out fuchs 255 rear 205 front. w/black targa bar, the SC type flares, Bilsteens all around, up front large 3.5' calipers, HD tranny 5sp 915/61/717
I know the car is not all correct but I like it, done deal. Hell the gaurds red is growing on me.

I welcome anyones knowledge of this S model if it came with heavy duty torsion bars, turbo tie rods etc..

It seems it was slowly being killed, with so much missing. No leaky 2.7 --"1977 Cars fitted with extra air pump, twin thermal reactors and exhaust recirculation." Engine studs that back themselves out.
Some heater stuff and AC stuff missing. Targa top shot. It is sad that it ended up this way, but I accept the challenge (see above sick in the head)
I think it had a 3.0 in it being 150k mi on it. It has rust under the battery, I will clean this up and use SEMS on it. I wont be sand blasting or stripping the car. It may not be worth as much as some others but it will be gold to me. This is a daily driver for me (100 mi round trip to work) I plan to enjoy every last mile in the car.

There is a lot for me to ask about but I will start with where I'm at.

I gutted the interior out and cleaned the floor and its ready to paint with? SEMS?While there I'm re-building pedal cluster, I've reconnected the grounds near the E-brake.

I changed out the keyed ignition with a complete new unit.

With the battery hooked up. The key turned on. Head light switch pulled out, no lights, pull wiper arm down, lights and washer go on. No wipers, The horn works when pressed. Oh yeah the clock works, maybe I should kill the clock and everything else will work! ha ha. The CDI and the three fuse bus in the engine compartment intact along with fuel accumulator and pump. AC not hooked up. I have Power at the starter and ground seems good. (no engine harness key can't turn starter)

In the trunk, At the three power buses.

The first bus three fuses bus deleted.
The second bus 1,2,3, fuses have power.
The 4 through 8 fuses no power.
The third bus 1 through 10 no power.

If your still here thanks for looking, I hope you can answer some of these questions. I have bought Waynes book 101 projects and the above parts from him. I bought the Haynes shop book online.

Thanks, Jeff

Did everything work before you did this?

Put the old one back in, there might be something wrong with the connection or the new unit.

Quick.....sell the clock.
It's worth a lot of money to a lot of people on this board with non-functioning ones!

Good luck tracking down your electrical gremlin....sounds like you might have a wire out of place on the ignition switch.

Wow, sounds like you have a LOT of work ahead of you, I applaud your enthusiasm Sounds like it's going to take a lot of sorting to make that a daily driver capable of 100 miles/day though?

If that is a US car, my understanding (which is always suspect) is that all 911's that weren't Turbos from 75-77 were "S" models, meaning there wasn't anything (from the factory anyway) particularly upgraded, tranny, suspension, etc. Now what has been upgraded in 33 years???

As far as your electrical gremlins, all you can do is open up that Haynes to the flow diagram and start to trace back wires, your front fuse blocks sound like a bit of a mess but you have to be systematic going through each path. That the lights work at all says something's hooked up and getting juice, but working from the wiper stalk and not the light switch sounds really freaky.

Starting.....WITH THE CAR OUT OF GEAR, can you span a screw driver across the contacts on the starter and it cranks? That might eliminate the problem back to the ignition circuit.

____________

Congratulations on your new toy, I'm a little obsessed myself (as are most around here) so we certainly understand. Pictures are kind of a requirement though if you want anyone to pay attention

The ignition had no key and it did perform the same way except the fuel pump came on and shot fuel down my brand new driveway. groan! I did find it interesting that it hasn't happened again. Maybe bad new ignition?

Sobamaflyer-
Good suggestions, I will try to post some pix with the qestions. I have not tried the hot start trick, wouldn't that just tell me the starter works. respectfully I believe that since there is no engine or wire harness to turn it on it would not turn with the key. I could not get the same results with the key off meaning I have to turn the key on and head light switch pulled out to get the wiper switch to do what I stated above.
Thanks

I did not mention that I took out every fuse (marked all first) and cleaned the fuse buses then cleaned every fuse. I also jumped power from where it was good to where there was no power and circuts did light up, make noise etc...
Thanks.
