930 gear selecting problems

Hi there, I have lost third gear for some reason, I have tried adjusting the linkage [between rear seats] and did seem to fix the problem... but only for 10 mins? I have fiddled with the linkage adjustment for hrs now with no joy. The nut n bolt have been done up tight! I have removed the whole gear leaver to inspect that but looks ok, the front nylon bush has a little play but unsure if this could be the issue as all other gears are ok.. It feels like the gear leaver moves into third but there is no notch or click, it hits a hard stop and wont stay in its third position and obviously no drive. I have manualy moved the shift ron and it clicks in all gears apart from third like a ball bearing is missing?
There is also a plastic/nylon/rubber plate that fits in the top of the shifter housing, it seems to have wider throw for 1st and 2nd positions than the 3rd and 4th..is this suppose to be a certain way around? just thinking if it was turned 180 deg it would allow more movement for third gear if this makes sence?

Any advise would be appreciated please. The last resort would be to pull the box out augh!
