Porsche 915 shifting question

Why does shifting into 5th gear, some times feels like 3rd?

Probably the shift coupler needs a tweak in adjustment.

On my 85 I can clearly feel the spring lockout. Never any doubt about 3rd or 5th.

If your shift coupler is worn that can cause a lot of slop.

Feels like 3rd in what way? RPM? shift pattern?

When shifting from 4th to 5th gear, I'm sure that some times when shifting into 5th, it really is 3rd gear. Is this the shifting pattern that you questioned?

I think Targa Me is asking if you truly shift into fifth and it looks, and feels to your hand, that you are in third then the shift pattern is the issue.

It sounds like you want to shift to fifth but it is going into third instead sometimes.

Do some searching on adjusting the shifter. It is pretty easy - especially with a friend to hold the shifter in the right place while you tighten the fasteners behind the rear seat.

Also make sure you are deliberate between fourth and fifth - up to neutral then over to the right then up. Make it a three step process and see if you still have issues.

Also, fast "power" shifting is not what the 915 does well. But shifting to fifth is not normally a gear you would do that to.

Here is a good article for you.

In mine, the bushings at the shifter base went bad. Maybe your spring popped loose? How does it feel when you go to reverse?

Thanks to all for your comments and advise. Every shift position is smooth and accurate with the exception of 5th gears. Sometimes (50%) of the time it connect smoothly and if not, it sounds exactly like 3rd gear, which I'm sure it is. Does anyone have a complete listing and instructions on the parts needed to be replace on this (915) shifting system?

This website has a lot of technical articles. Here is one on converting to the factor short shift kit.

See the tab at the top of the page called tech info center for future reference and projects. Very helpful.

Bob Kontak thank you for this information.
I purchased a short shift kit some time ago and am reluctant to install it, until I can resolve my 5th gear issue. Do you think that this would help?
