well, the other day at work I saw a brand new red Berlinaa Ferrari (whatever the name is) on a flatbed towing truck being carried away! i wonder what happened.
this was the same car that has been seen there a few times, sometimes with a cover on it in the parking lot....who would park and put a cover on their car? that's kinda snobbish |

360 Modina maybe?
I know a few folks that cover their cars when parked at work. All are a bit on the anal side. I wouldn't automatically assume snobby. You can get rather quirky acting when you spend that much money on a car. |

Covering a valuable car makes sense given the problems of air pollution and UV radiation.

Stray15, What pollution you ask?
Wash your car, drive it for one week. Wash your car again. After you dry your car rub your hand across the hood of your car. Doesn't feel smooth does it? Feel a little like sand paper? Thats what Doug is talking about. |

Snobbery of the Jeff Goldblum-typified kind demonstrated in 'Thank God it's Friday' seems likely, though a hired armed guard to accompany the car to the shop for its' 150 days-per-year servicing typically experienced ... seems like a better way to keep one from being damaged in the truly dangerous service environment!

Particulate matter embedding itself into the paint. But then maybe you live away from a city, factories, power plants, steel mills, etc.

I sometimes cover my Pcar at work because it sits out in the open Georgia summer sun. The months of July and August are rarely under 93 degrees, and mostly upwards of 100. No shade anywhere and the car is black. Saves the leather dash and prevents paint fade. Additionally, lawn spray, bird sh**, etc, probably doesn't do any good either. The sun is the biggest reason for me though. If there was shade I wouldn't bother.

Ahem... I cover my car while I'm at work. There's a lot of sand blowing around, and sun, and kids with sticky hands...

Heck...I had a brand new Porsche on a flatbed once. A '69 912. Loved the car, really. But once, after I'd owned it less than two weeks, the damned thing blew an oil cooler...dumped oil all over my driveway. I was pissed! But I got a bit of revenge...I borrowed a friend's flatbed & pickup to tow it to the dealership. My friend raised cattle...so you know what the pickup and the flatbed was covered in. You wouldn't believe how quickly dealership people wanted my car off that manure covered trailer, and me out of there...car got fixed quickly too.
Uh, you think because I pulled in right in front of the showroom they were most accomodating? I'm sure the potential customers enjoyed the show.... |

I was once driving into London on the motorway, in an old 1980 BMW M535i I think, and a Ferrari flew past me at maybe about 110 + mph. And I thought, "Wow"!
About 10 miles ahead it was sat on the hard shoulder with smoke pouring out of the middle of it - the engine of course - with a man who looked really "eighties", blonde streak in the hair etc. (it was like 1998) looking into the engine. Hmmm.....expensive, I thought. ------------------ '75 911S Targa '81 BMW Alpina C1 2.3 |

I just read recently that given the choice between the sun and parking under a tree, one is better off parking in the sun as tree sap, etc. cause more (and major) damage to paint. On the other hand, it is the UV that kills the car paint and interior, not the heat!
I myself would probably cover the car given the time. |

I cover AND garage my car at work. Up to 110oF in summer AND I work at the beach with all that lovely salty moist air. Wouldn't you cover your car....any car?

Maybe the Ferrari guy just has the car flat-bedded each day to and from his house to work to keep from putting miles on it.
Some guys are into driving, others are just into 'ownership'. ------------------ 1971 911T - 2.5L Big Bore |

i still think covering your car at work (or any other public place) is still snobbish....every time i pass one of those i laugh.
if your car cant stand the heat, humidity, pollen, bird crap, dust, or whatever other environmental factor, then there's something seriously wrong with it.... |

After the end of March I cover my car at work every day.
Why? Ever get in an uncovered car after it's been sitting out in in the sun for 9 hours when it's 116 degrees out? Two words: black leather! OUCH! blue PS I saw a bright yellow F360 Modena the other day. God that's a beautiful car. I'll take one with the F1 paddle shifters, please... ------------------ blue '81 SC Targa |

Have you ever had the opportunity to hear one of those things run? That has got to be the strangest sound I have ever heard comming out of a car.
As for car covers, some folks just don't want to wash and wax their cars every day. Has nothing to do with being a snob. If you appreciate something you take care of it the best you can. |
