Clutches and other costs
Hello fellow Pelicanites,
I'm a Porsche newbie with a serious interest in a 78-83 Targa. I've been lurking for a few weeks now and decided to bite the bullet and join. So my question is this: I found a candidate for purchase in a 79 Targa with 100K miles, so whats the cost (parts and labor) on replacing a rubber-centered clutch with a spring-centered clutch? Also any other items not mentioned in the 911 FAQ on this site would be most helpful. I have not had an opportunity to ask the current owner of the car any questions yet, as I want to be armed with as much replacement/maintenance costs as possible before I go into negotiations. Buy the parts from Pelican and DIY. Easy enough to drop and install in a saturday. Budget another day to resurface the flywheel, or plan ahead and get it done at lunch time.

It's very unlikely the car has the original rubber clutch! I would think these are "collector's items" now!
So if you can find out when the clutch was replaced. Lifespan is somewhat variable depending upon how it's been driven. It's an engine out job , so not cheap unless you can do it. Others can chime in. The Carrera chain tensioner upgrade will add value to the car and if the newer style airbox (~1981-2) has not been fitted , a pop-off valve should have been installed. Even then , most here say the POV is needed. The engine and transmission are your major concerns. Those , and any rust... Good luck & keep us updated! cheers, Paul

Clutch $1000 for the whole clutch kit, plus other engine out incidentals.
The tensioner kit, well it is my opinion that you can skip that one. I did the upgrade on my car but I think the money is really better spent somewhere else. Good luck

While I am sure some of you can drop an engine and replace a clutch in a day - I think it is a multi-day project - especially for a newbie.
I am in the midst of a transmission rebuild, clutch replacement, CV joint replacement. Have spent about 3.5k total for Clutch (about 1200), tranmission rebuild (about 1400), and misc parts - $800 or so. I did not have to do all of this until about 2 years of ownership - so I think you might be jumping ahead of yourself. Get a PPI done by a reputable and unbiased shop and see what you are in for. If A/C is important to you - check that out - because that can easily be $1k or more to resolve. Best of luck - in finding your car - and trying to anticipate your costs up-front. If you build in a 5k buffer or so - you will be in good shape. You may not have that much to do, but then again you could be in for more work. (Not trying to be overly negative - but just basing this on my experiences!)
