What do you think? I'm going to look at it tomorrow

Craigslist add...

1974 911S, needs dist, does have rust, but this is the 1st year of the short hood 911s. Good project, could be a fun car with work..
$4,500 takes it, title in hand..

The whole reason I got this car was for a parts car, I was looking at a 74 Carrera that had a later engine & modified susp, so I was going to install the correct parts back on the 74 & restore it, convert this one to a IROC. But since I bought a matching #s 914-6, I was going to use the running gear on a clone on my extra 914, and the rear bumper on my SC and sell this as a roller, but yet another, bigger project has come up, so I need the space.. I'm not going to part it out, even though I could get more than the $4500 I'm asking, but then would have stuff left over.. Does include seats, only removed to check floors..

Well, what do you think? Terrible idea? has potential?

If it has holes rusted through it or the engine is seized then i'm definitely walking away but I'm am planning on and assuming an engine rebuild is necessary. Plans are for it to become a "streat-able" track car over the next year.

I'll take plenty of pictures tomorrow as well.

thanks for your help!

Justin

There's an old quote on here that comes to mind:

There's all $20,000 cars. Certainly the case here....Save yourself time/work and go buy one in good shape....G'luck

It's your money and your time, but I had a '76 project car once and over the next 4 years realized I wasn't making enough progress to warrant keeping the car, so I sold it and bought this... for under 10 grand. So far, I've only done minor cosmetic work, upgraded the front cooler and changed the wheel bearings front and one side rear. It needed new seats and rear tires as well. I still have less than 12K into it, but it runs like a jackrabbit! The PO was only the second owner (for 24 years!) and took very good care of the car and I have a book of maintenance records back to day one. I'd say keep looking.

Justin,

but this is the 1st year of the short hood 911s
The seller sounds like he knows Porsches, but the 1974 is the first of the short hood, impact bumper cars. For 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1977 the engines were 2.7 liter and had a problem where the head studs would pull out of the magnesium engine block. $$$ So, lets do some math:

If this car were in great shape, it might be worth $12,000. Purchase price is $4,000, a good paint job for a rust free car is $6,000, if you do the interior yourself $1,000. You're close to being in over your head and you haven't done any rust repair or mechanical repair.

The really expensive stuff to fix on this car are an engine rebuild and rust repair. If you did the engine rebuild yourself, farming out the machining, you could do that for $6,000. Does the trans need rebuilt? Can't tell if you can't drive it - add $2,500 if it does. Now you've spent close to the $20,000 that Bob mentioned above, and many years of hard work that you did for free.

I haven't got to the cost of rust repair yet. I don't have any experience with rust repair - and unless your a body and paint man, I'd start with a rust free car.

Why not?

Yes, you'll have to put work into it, but so what?

Honestly I'm one of those people who would tear apart a $20k car anyway just to make sure everything was fine and I understood it all, so why not start with something cheaper and knowing you're going to be doing some work on it?

I'm weird like that.

And I'm partial to '74s.

Justin,
In this economy, it's a buyers' market out there. Therefore, you settling for a car that could easily soak up $20K in restoration/mods, is throwing money out the window.
If this particular car had a storied racing history, that's a whole different story.

Keep searching Justin, there's a Porsche out there with your name on it. Good luck.

There is not one good reason why the car you are looking at is worth more than $1000. I wouldn't pay a cent over $500.

Do alot of reading and research on Porche's to understand what you realy like. I have pinned down to 3.2 Carrera 84-88 after all my research. I have seen alot and walked off on alot in my 8 months of searching. Came across an 84' Coupe with only 2 owners before me and garage kept all it's life. Rust free with original paint, rare Rauch Grey Metallic, needed nothing mechanically and all I had to do was add all the aftermarket goodies. Paid only $9K...it's a buyers market so keep looking.

74s are great cars with the spirit of the longhoods that preceded them. I would pass unless you have very strong DIY skills. The car will never financially justify the cost of a professional repair.

Just take something to trade - I'd definitely have a good look for rust - is there is any - then I would walk away

That could easily be a $20K 911 that will be worth $8k.

If you're going into a project that deep start with something collectible like a '73 or earlier.

I have a middie that I've spent more than it's worth on so not being predjudiced here, just trying to save you the heartache and $$$ of starting with the wrong car.

There are complete, running, nice middies for under $10k out there. Unless you specifically want a '74 I would try to find a decent SC or Carrera for a driver or a longhood for a resto project if that's what you want to do.

I'd only put a $6,000 paint job on a really, really, really nice car. That one isn't it.
