Thumbs up 911 M&K Muffler Saga

The very first thing I did upon putting the '73 911T up on floor stands was to replace the rusted out, probably original, muffler in this 1975 911S engine. I was going to change the oil and tranny fluid, but this was more immediate. You've probably read my whining and gnashing of teeth getting this done, but finally did.

I ordered a M&K Stainless muffler directly from Ben McFarland of M&K. What a great guy. He had never installed one in this combination but thought it should fit although it's marketed for a new Cararra series engine. It might even open up his product line for the '75- beyond 2.7L engines. Naturally he'd take it back he said.

When it arrived it was a beautiful piece of engineering. I could have displayed it on my living room coffee table! But the devil is always in the details. There is a corner brace on the 911T that sort of keeps the fender and valance and bumper all in place. There was no way I could get the left portion of the muffler beyond that protruding brace. Bummer. (But it still might work in a '75 and beyond chassis.)

So I sent it back and am now looking at a Dansk Painted SS muffler as the final solution. It looks very much like the one I pulled out and with a circumference that is much smaller than the M&K.

My highest recommendation to them for the quality of the M&K muffler. Same price on Pelican but I wanted to talk to the guy that makes them and that was a most positive experience.

Tom

+1 for M&K

Couldn't agree more! Ben is great guy , this past winter I called him about stopping by to pick up a cat bypass and muffler from him, only problem was that day happened to be a snow day for his kids (no school) and he was out sledding with his kids. "No problem just swing by my house I have all the parts you need". Really, now that's some personal service. If your looking for new exhaust speak with Ben he is a great guy and his products are a thing of beauty. (No I'm not getting a commission)

Yeapper, was going to display the muffler but wife draw the line at the SSIs...

Also I was worry about the tail pipes not being perferctly visualy aligned, 0.000001" at 10 feet (knowing that you are a nut case is a good first step) but he reasure me that when installed if it's not within my specs , we'll fix it up.

As to where to procured such items, I support Wayne and his crew all the way but for this and the Chip, I like the extra touchy feeling... happily maried, no proposition please

After sending some photos, Ben gently suggested that I should turn the muffler around, the cat did not know any better either...

He probably still laughing about me asking him to give me a good price on a Cat Bypass (I know Steve was after I ask him if the re-chipping would be more with the By Pass)

P.S. Ben, second supportive Post within 12 hrs, is that 5 or 10% off the Cat Bypass order???

Mine........

+1 for SSI's and M&K Muffler. Stock off the shelf parts (bought here) work perfectly with NO modification on my new Intermeccanica Speedster. You would think Ben made the muffler custom to fit my car it fits so perfect.

The color comes from the workout on the Dyno at The Stable in SFO. The whole exhaust was almost chery red. 235 HP is a fun ride.

Ben is a great guy, I've done business with him and he's an honest man! He makes beautiful exhaust systems, too!

Mark,

When I spoke with Ben I had to flip a coin on the wide or narrow tailpipe look.

See my signature for lots of pictures on Photobucket of the build. You sent me pictures of your build I still have. I was going to build a 6 cyl 356 but after selling my restored 60 Sunroof for "stupid money" the IM-6 was done in 9 months.

I was hoping to be at the camp out on the maiden run this year with the car but missed it by two weeks.

Cheers!

Now I know why is so clean... You can even see the new colored line on the tires. No wonders that Tom (grizzfan) is in awe. How many miles you got on her now?

I'm guessing that you got it in Vancouver. I look at them but just could not afford it

Delivery date as 7-9-10. I had 1200 the first week, 3,000 by the end of vacation 7-28 and 3,800+ now. By the end of October with the trips planned likely over 6,000.

The price is NOT for the faint of heart. Quality costs money. But the smiles per mile are worth the price.
