I went to two Advanced Auto Parts and neither one had them or ever heard of them. Thought they might be available online only. I sure would like to find 3 of them.

I would not worry, and its not that i have to change them. It's the point that i have to every 3 years. It's a pain.

I'm just getting into do it yourself repairs on my '89 Carrera, and even though I am by no means even close a competent mechanic, I decided to replace my hood struts and deck-lid struts.

I'm happy to report that it was not very difficult and immensely rewarding. Here's a video I made of the hood replacement. I hope to edit the video of the deck-lid too, but that will take some time.

I like the PVC tube or rubber pipe idea, I have 2 x brand new gas struts and they only hold the hood up when its warm. Cold mornings are a problem.

i have an aluminum hood on my 930 so it is easy to lift and hold while i place the pin. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1361222887.jpg

Not that it's not a good idea, but I've been known to pay the stupid tax, and I think I would attach a huge orange flag to that pin to remind me to remove it.

For those of us that are really cheap...MG and the like had hood struts for years that had a little spring loaded clip in a sliding track that held up the hood (bonnet) when open.
All you needed to do was lift the hood a bit and push in the clip to lower the hood.
I said I was cheap!...LOL

I in fact prefer loose/ dead hood shocks. I can drop the hood to close shut. If shocks are good, then you have to press the hood down and you'd have a finger print on your nice shiny black hood.

Got one today and works great. Cost was $13 and change. Sure beats a tennis racket. Mine works, until you stick your head under the hood. Hood shocks $17.95 - $29.95 times 2. Thanks for the info.

I bought Weltmeister Hood shocks from Eckler's, formerly Performance Products. They have a life time guarantee. This doesn't mean they will last a life time, it means they will replace them after they die for free. So you will be replacing hood shocks, but not paying for them. Am getting replacements as we speak.

RSR Hood Props works for me..nice addition with provenance :D

LeckerNeunelf 02-21-2013 09:04 PM

OK -- I took a video of me replacing both the front hood struts and the rear deck-lid struts. Truuuuust me, it's not that hard, and I typically HATE doing this sort of repair. Although, i guess it's safe to say, I'm kind of getting into it :-)

One shock on each side lasted me less than a year. I double the choack on each side, last me 4 or 5 years now, and are still working well.

You guys might just be buying aftermarket shocks of lousy quality. I have one 911 that is 40 years old and still on its original shocks. I have another that hasn't had a replacement in at least a dozen years and that's as far back as I can remember, it might be more.

Another suggestion would be to open and close the lids a little more slowly.

Just found a very dusty one at Autozone. The date on the package is 2010. I'll looking forward to not having to work around the stick in the engine compartment.

There's another autozone near me that I'll check after work.

Bumping this. I guess Pylon Lift Locks went under? Can't find them anywhere. I have a single shock attempting to hold up a spoiler lid (added later). I don't want to double shock the Drivers side as I hear it leads to wacky deck lid alignment. May have to DIY PVC pipe it, but that looks a little too ghetto. I spoke to our hosts and they said I need to weld a bracket on the passenger side if I want to add a single shock there....don't want to molest the car though. Any suggestions or links to Pylon would be great.

I may go with the Seine systems support.
