apply brakes and idle increases?

I can only guess that something is amiss with my booster. (82SC) Applying the brakes while at idle will increase my idle a few 100 RPM. My brakes are pretty sluggish also. If anyone has a clever test to confirm booster trouble, let me know.

thanks,
Ken

That would be my guess - the booster or the hose to the booster is going bad. Search on John Walker's thread about this condition.

A test for this is to pump the pedal several times, then put your foot lightly on the pedal and start the car - the pedal should move away from you as the booster via the vaccum (or lack thereof) kicks in.

does anyone know how far the pedal should go down when the car starts? Mine goes down VERY little.

Yeah, it won't go down like a US car. You will have really crappy brakes if the booster is not working, real bad! So I'm thinking that they do work but there might be a vacuum leak in the engine (one problem) the brakes might need to be rebuilt/overhauled (second problem) The booster might be leaking (third problem) or a combination of all three. Start with the booster by removing the vacuum hose with the engine running and check for vacuum and that the engine surges a bit. A vacuum gage can be placed in this line and check that it holds vacuum after the engine is shut off.
Check the condition of the pads and calipers, bleed the brakes, replace the pads, overhaul the calipers, re-bleed the brakes. Then check the engine for small vacuum leaks. Start with that.
