Wrench sizes and allen keys

Hello all,

I've read through a number of threads about assembling a tool kit. I am planning a 3,100 mile trip driving my new (to me) G50 Coupe home from San Fran.

I have a pretty good idea from the other threads of what I may need (VISA card seems to be #1), but I was wondering about wrench sizes.

I was planning a 6/7 double ended wrench, and combination wrenches in 8,10,13,15, and 17 and a good quality adjustable 6".

Would I need the missing 11,12,14,16?

Also I was planning to bring a fold-out allen key set up to 8mm. Would this suffice?

I'll bulk all this up with a dvm, some pliers/cutters, a few other bits, and a spare fan belt and DME relay.

Quite frankly I am not too sure how useful any of this might be. My experience is it doesn't matter how many tools you have - it's actually hard to fix anything on a car, it's usually a matter of bolting on a new part. So I'm sure while I'm waiting in butt-f-nowhere for a new alternator I can buy or borrow whatever tools I might need or find a place to do the work.

Cell phone is # 1, Visa is # 2.

Factory tool kit with a few fuses and relays, a fan belt and DME are about all I would do on the side of the road.

I don't recall needing 11,12,14,16 on my early 911 or my '75 either.

You need larger Allens in various places - can use snap on type ones on a ratchet handle, T-bar, etc.

tools you carry depend on where you can work (roadside?) and what parts you carry or can get.

I once changed a BMW head gasket by the side of a backcountry Orygun road... but had to hitchhike to buy the part.

The clutch cable on early cars is 11mm, not sure about the G50s.

An 11mm is a good idea. I seem to remember a lot of adjustment cables using 11mm nuts.

Also, in my two long distances trips to get cars, I have yet to use any of the tools that I've brought along. That being said, I'll still bring a set on my next trip.

Depending on the car you are buying, you may want to bring some oil with you. Good luck on the trip!

AAA offers a tow package, it's something like $80 a year and they'll tow you up to 100 miles. Call 'em up, its instant acceptance.

+1 on AAA but what do you do when you are in a place with no cell coverage? Bring fuses and a red relay (will replace black as well). Make sure you have an inflater for the collapsible spare. If the alternator light comes on, pull over immediately. It could be a broken belt (which will overheat the engine very quickly). Keep a close eye on the temp and oil pressure as well.

# 3 is a really good flashlight. #4 is a roll of plastic you can spread on the ground.

G-50 clutch is hydraulic.

Hopefully you won't have to split the cases or set pinion depth by the side of the road, so the factory tool kit plus good combination screwdriver (hex bits) adjustable wrench, maybe some allen keys and some other stuff will be sufficient. Vise grips, duct tape, maybe a magnetic retreiver. If it were me I'd take an LED headlamp in addition to the flashlight. Spare belt, fuses, DME relay, all are good if you can get them on the outbound flight.

Of course, if you're well prepared, the Porsche gods will smile on you and your car will run like a jet for the trip home.

Fan belt for sure, but in order to change it you'll need the special spanner, so make sure you have one of those. DME relay also, and a 10mm wrench to loosen the mounting nut. And fuses of all amperages and a red round relay.

And duct tape, electrical tape, and a breaker bar with a 19mm socket for removing a wheel.

Did you get a PPI? If so, ask the shop who inspected it if they recommend any maintenance items before taking it on a cross-country jaunt. Make sure the plugs, filters and other basic maintenance items are in good shape.

maybe a dumb question but the red relay and the black relay .... what is the difference in them ....I ask because I have seen the same before that the red can replace the black but is it the other way around or ?????

The red one has a diode in it so the current only goes in one direction. It's only used on the fuel pump (on the SC). You could temporarily replace it with a black one.

You might also want to include a "Slime" brand tire repair kit,which includes an air compressor and a 32 oz bottle of slime which you inject in your wheel through the tire valve ...
It will fix a flat/puncture up to 1/4 inch !

I use the stuff in my ATV's and it's saved my butt many times on the trail !
I also carry a kit in all my vehicles including the Porsche.It will get you home or at least to the nearest garage .
Spare oil of the same brand you normally use,appropriate funnel and a bottle of Maguiars quick detailer with a few microfiber cloths to clean any road grime/bird poop off
your paint ... lol
