Forums Issues...

The problems over the past few mornings have been caused by my attempts to get a 3rd server online to speed up the forums. I'm happy to announce that I think I have fixed all of the problems, and the forums are now running at super speed. I predict tomorrow morning when you are reading this you will say, "my the forums seem much faster this morning."

Let me know if you don't say that. :)

Thanks for the hard work, Wayne. I'm an Admin for another forum and we just switched servers and from VB to IPB. Man we had a lot of glitches!

Curious, why did you switch from vB to IPB?

Wayne,

Wow...super fast now. Really appreciate your efforts on this site as well as your whole business. I think everyone realizes the unique deal we have here. A car guy enmeshed in our favorite car providing this web site along with a parts & accessory supply business to facilitate our addiction.

It was for economic reasons. I just take care of day to day ops, not the software stuff.

Actually, you speak the truth. I have a 962 project that I haven't had time to work on just yet because I've been messing with these crazy forums.

One slow query in the past 14 hours (slow = greater than 10 seconds), with zero lock time.

Still only one slow query, now about 24 hours...

Just wondering...Has anyone noticed the forums seem to be running much faster? Or is it me...

Wayne - your perfect gift would be a sports car of the future that needs repair and has a server farm in it...

Thanks for all your work!

Well, 36 hours later, and we had one slow query on the main server, and only two or so on the search server. This was compared to about 150 over a 12 hour period on the single server. What this means is that for the past 36 hours, only three people saw a delay in response from the server that was greater than 10 seconds (and even then, the response time was 15 seconds).

I believe that I have solved at least any problems with the servers and actual CPU processing speed.

... Those 3 or 4 spoilers who slow down the systems to be banned for a week or two to see if they were the main Root Cause :D:p:D

I think that is in line with some ISO 9000:2002 crapola http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...oilet_claw.gif procedures that you might be familiar with :eek::rolleyes:

I noticed that the post counts aren't working. Is it possible some lint from the Shamwow
got stuck somewhere?

Wayne 962 09-03-2010 08:45 PM

Hmm, they seem to be working for me?

-Wayne

Wayne 962 09-05-2010 10:28 AM

Still working fine today.

-Wayne

RWebb 09-05-2010 11:18 AM

fine for me

one "exception" is that after posting on a thread, the post sometimes hangs - I see the post text as if I never hit the post it button instead of seeing the thread with my post at the bottom

JJ 911SC 09-05-2010 05:28 PM

Yo are correct. Everything seem to be back to normal if not better.

In the name of the "modesty" principle, I may have to report you to an unsuspecting Moderator (Parts, Bill, Jack or Noah) that would go along for a week suspension for over stating achievement :D;):D

You deserve all the thanks you are getting on the 3 or 4 on going thread.

Merci mon ami, if it was not for you (and your site) I would have not be driving Das Babe like there is no tomorrow.

The quick post thing works using javascript, and sometimes the browser doesn't always cooperate. I've seen this before - the server has sent a reply back saying "I've made the post" or something like that, but the browser doesn't get it for some reason. I think this is browser related, it happens more on some browsers and less on others...

super slow this morning... but not always

Interesting, after the morning maintenance the forum is back to being fast.

pete3799 09-06-2010 04:16 AM

I guess it must be a problem on my end (post count)

Still moves slow for me and seems to be related to the time of day. Fast in the morning and very slow from 3PM EST onward.

thx - I use Firefox, BTW

Wayne 962 09-09-2010 12:15 PM

After watching the stats on the server, I believe that all speed issues are fixed. If someone is still experiencing slowdowns, then my best guess is that the problem is with their connection, or with a route from their ISP to the co-location center at USC (where the servers are located).

Now that you got this one fix, how about this one;

Is the top sticker call "New Pelican stickers" on another threat started in August 10, is the current one? Could use a couple of the bottom one :D;):D

Hi Wayne,

I noticed that all of the photos I try to save are in Bitmap format. I can only upload jpeg files but I can only save in bitmap. Is this a problem on my end? It seems to be this way on the Early 911S Registry also, but this is a new development for me. I have always had jpeg as the default photo save format until a week or so ago.

download IrfanView

Flieger 09-10-2010 11:53 AM

Thanks for the suggestion. I have always used the Microsoft Picture Viewer that comes with Windows. It allows basic editing. I have always been able to save as jpeg, usually only jpeg but sometimes other formats. It is only recently that the bitmap thing happened. This is when I right click and say "Save Picture As".

I found some stuff that suggested deleting temporary internet files but that did not work.

I can convert to jpeg by saving the bitmap, making a copy, compressing the copy for the conversion to jpeg, saving the copy, then having the option of deleting the bitmap. This is just too much hassle.

The weird thing is that if I try to save one of my Flickr photos (all jpegs) they can only be saved bitmap. If I try to save off Pelican (bitmap not allowed), then bitmap is the only option.

JFairman 09-10-2010 11:59 AM

In the file "save picture as" dialog box that you use to save pictures in windows by right clicking the picture or using the file menu up in the toolbar there is usually a little drop down menu on the right side in the "save as type" line down at the bottom of the dialog box.

When I save a picture from here that drop down menu lets you save the file as a jpeg or bitmap.
Select which one you want and go from there, or use a simple and fast photoeditor program like ACDSee32 to convert the bitmap to jpeg or whatever format you want.

Flieger 09-10-2010 12:10 PM

I only get bitmap in the drop down menu. I used to have options, the first one being jpeg. If I try to name the file "file.jpg", it end up as a bitmap file "file.jpg.bmp"
