Stone Guard stickers

Guys,

I've got a 1984 Carrera and a PO had put a Turbo tail and stone guard stickers on it.

I'm going to change the Turbo tail to a Carrera Tail because of originality and I was wondering if I should also remove the stone guard stickers too.

The stone guard stickers were put on the Turbos because of the wider guards, but on the narrowbody Carrera, I'm thinking without the Turbo tail they don't fit the look.

Thoughts......

Cheers,

Geoff.

IMO, they look good with either tail. Without a tail, not so much.

If you decide to remove them be careful as they can become almost baked onto the paint surface. Use some type of decal remover and peel very gently.

Geoff,

Personally i don't think they serve a purpose on a narrow bodied car,but if you do chose to remove them, use a hair dryer to soften them up,it makes it easier to remove them ...

Cheers !

I think a PO had put them on when the Turbo tail went on, the give it that "Turbo want to be look".

I agree, they really don't serve any useful purpose on a narrowbody car and
I think the car looks much "cleaner" without them.

I've searched a few threads which detail their removal......heat, go slow and clean up the adhesive with prepsol or similar.

Thanks for the comments guys....

Cheers,

Geoff.

They most certainly serve a purpose on a narrow body car ( at least the somewhat-wider 78-89 rear fenders, compared to earlier-body 911's) .... as adding them hides a very nasty stone chip encountered without them on in the first place.........

Removing a sticker is fairly easy. My car is Grand Prix white. The PO put on the stickers 25 years ago. The paint was very yellowed under the stickers. I removed the stickers to remove the torsion bars. I had to put new stickers on to cover the yellowed paint.

You can always take the guards off and if you want them back on this shop offers them in a magnetic material.

I just removed mine and installed some Carrera side scripts.
I intend to have some clear stone guards made from ventureshield or similar material, which I will then apply over the vinyl.

I have the narrow body stone guards on mine and like them, I don't care for the larger turbo guards on a narrow body. Just personal taste.

I had to replace one of mine when I tore it taking the torsion bar plug off. I ordered a new one from our host. I didn't know it, but the ones on the car were turbo stone guards. So now I have the best of both worlds, a turbo on one side and an NA stone guard on the other.
The new one is much thinner material than the turbo (which is obviously some kind of replacement). The black part of the old one came off easily, but left behind a thick white "pad." I softened it with lacquer thinner and scraped it off with a bondo squeegee. It only took about 10 minutes.

If your car was repainted before the sharkfin was applied, it may pull the paint off when you try to remove it. Possible.

I don't like them, except on a turbo. My PO put clear ones on my SC before I bought it. They are difficult to see from any distance, so I'll leave them on.

I agree 100% on this.
After my repaint recently I debated on installing them but opted to do it anyway.

The PO had them on my car when I bought it. I had a respray and told the painter not to replace, which he did anyway. With dark colors they do not stand out as much. It hasnt been a big enough deal to take them off and they do help protect the paint. After a drivers ed i find rubber from the track on them so I assume rocks will hit there too.

Arrow Really...

... it's whatever you like.

It's in the eye of the beholder.

If it was not, the "not so looking good one" would never get married (Normally I would put some funny Smilies character's but since it's true I'm not).

Visual trick to try.....

If only for "looks"....here's something to try that is totally reversible.

Noitce that the shark fin touches the lower horizontal rubber strip of the rocker panel covers. Beneath the rubber strip, the rockers are usually body color. You can add a black, vinyl cover over the lower body colored rocker to "tie-in" the black of the shark fin - rubber strip - lower rocker. I've seen this and it actually looks nice. Purists hate it, though...

JJ

I remember asking this question once and also asking if someone could photoshop a "for instance" shot of this. I tried very hard to find this before posting but couldn't locate it.
