Question early heat exchangers

After reading the recent posts about bypass pipes vs. SSI's, It would be far easier to do the bypass conversion. But then I cam across these.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=600170310&r=0&t=0

The exchanger on the left has an extra shroud around the pipes and a small fitting of some sort near the top where the heater hose connects. Can these be modified for an SC?

Thanks in advance

Rob

Should fit no problem! I believe the extra outlet is for the mfi pre-heat?(I'm guessing)

Buy em & let it rip!

All you would need to do is plug the small fitting near the heater hose. Otherwise, some heated air will escape before reaching the heater valve and passing into the cabin. You don't need to do anything about the small shroud over the pipes. When I converted to Webers, I continued to use my MFI heat exchangers for years with no problems. While not necessary, I also plugged the inlet/outlet holes in the small shroud to keep water out.

Rob:

The only issue you might run into is the thickness of the exhaust flanges, in that the studs may require changing if the flanges on the MFI exchangers are a different width than on the SC.

Good luck.

I just bought a set of used MFI heat exchangers and plan to install them on my SC (along with a Dansk SS muffler).

I just cut the MFI heat exchanger part off altogether - that's extra weight I don't need to haul around you know.

Underneath this cladding, the pipes were like new, I wasn't so lucky on the other set though..the tailpipe near the muffler had a few pinholes and is getting pretty thin from rust in places. Luckily I have an ace welder working at the plant where I work who can braze and/or patch them up good.

I assume (hope) the pipes under the big heat exchangers are sound. Wouldn't want to fall asleep on the way to work no would I?

I paid $200 canadian for the set, which works out to about $125 in your currency.

It might be wise to remove that extra heat shroud just to make installation a little easier. That shroud looks like it makes access with your tools pretty difficult. I guess the early guys can tell you how to manage it.
