Getting Powdercoating off of Fuchs
I may be buying some Fuchs that the owner thinks have been powder coated all black.
I'd like to go with a standard anodize/polished lip (black centers) and am wondering how difficult will it be to get the powder coating off. anyone have experience with this?

Any paint stripper will take it right off no problemo. I actually got some gasket remover on a powdercoated surface and it lifted it very easily. Then I hit the rest of it with paint stripper and it was off in a few minutes.

I would try Strip-Eze and do a test spot first... I've used Strip-Eze on old Zildjian cymbals and no damage was done to them...

If it is epoxy or polyesther (which was used on my wheels) it may have to be removed mechanically. I tried every chemical stripper available here without any of them making a dent in it. If anyone can point against something that works on polyesther I'll run right off and buy it

I use commercial carburetor cleaner. Powder coat melts right off. I've used them on aluminum Harley Davidson heads and cylinders with no damage to the metal. Recommended by professional powder coaters.

Depends on quality of job done. If PC was done right, its difficult to remove.

Unless you get them cheap or they're rare I would wait to buy another set. You are talking about a significant time commitment for a set of fuchs. Good powder coating is hard to get off. never telling what the anodizing looks like underneath.

That is ultimately why I decided not to get them. Yes, they were a great deal, $950 for 7x8x16, but to be honest I'm just going to save for 17s, Fikses or Rota's.

I think that is a good decision. If the powder coating is nice they will make a great track set for somebody who will use them as is.

Are these wheels in MN? If so, I have seen them in person. Tempting as it was, I passed as well. |

permatex gasket remover. paint it on thick and let it sit overnight. you can wipe it clean with a paper towel in the morning.

Yep. That's what took the powdercoating off of the fill plate of my ATL fuel cell.
