Door Latch Mechanism

My driver side door was stuck in the lock position and I couldn't open the door. I was able to remove the door panel from the inside and by luck was able to get the door lock mechanism to unlock. I now want to remove the door lock mechanism so I can see what went wrong. Can anyone help me with the removal process? I have a 1985 Targa. Thanks.

Hi Ralph and welcome. Not to sound like a schmartass, but if you do a search on door latch, you should get something.

I would try spraying it with some dry graphite lube first or prepare to get down with it for removal........IIRC, since you have the cover off, you'll have to use a small screw driver to pop some of the linkages out from the white plastic 'cups'. But now in the Targa at least, the window track may block removal of the door latch, or make removal a bit more difficult.

On the outside edge of the door where the striker is, you'll see 3 countersunk phillips screws. Undo these and the latch mechanism is free - except you will have to maneuver it big time so that the striker goes thru the hole AND so you can get it past the window track. Double check me on this and see what someone else says, but you might have to remove or loosen that track.

Here is mine (RH?) removed, cleaned, not lubed yet. Notice white cups on right top and bottom for links. Notice 3 blue nuts for screws. Striker in 'underneath'.

Thanks for the reply Steely. I was hoping I didn't have to deal with the window. Will try to get it out this weekend.

Garage
hi ralph 808 look on door handle assembly threed there is fantastic pictures and explanations
i had same problem as you with my 1990 targa c4 r/h drive ,i was not sure about stripping out the latch and also the handle the hardest part was to manuver the striking latch througfh the hole but it does go through quite easy at the right angle,i had no problem with the window mech being in the way, when replacing make sure that plugs are in solidly and all works 100% before replacing panel i drove around for a week before replacing panel,i have found with the porsche that if you have alot of confidence all the jobs are possible without paying a fortune at the garage (lets face it spares are expensive enough without labour costs)
best off luck
