well...at least it didn't go BOOM..BANG...BANG...BANG...
went drag racing again last weekend. did seven runs altogether. three practice, one dial in, and three in the run-off. all good, beat all comers until the last race, the final in the open street class.
I had been having a little trouble finding third all day. fortunately I had enough on the other cars I could find it and get moving again before they passed me. I'd installed a seine gate system recently and am having issues. my own fault, I tend to want to 'push' it into third instead of letting the spring do it for me. if I just push lightly forward from second it goes right into third. so, last race. against a cobalt ss intercooled turbo sumthin, sumthin , apparently from germany. yes, yes, I see the irony. ![]() anyway. got off the line OK and started pulling away. into second and gaining ground, going for third had a bit of trouble but after some jiggling it finally went into gear. first gear....... popped out the clutch and floored it, with predictable results. somehow, the engine didn't crash. I must have horseshoes up my b*tt. coasted off the track and it seemed to idle ok. drove back to the pits and no problems. on the way home, about an hour drive, I kept it between 4k and 5k with the somewhat fatalistic/reckless idea that if it's gonna go it might as well be now. got good and hot, no problems. next day I did a compression test and a leakdown as well to check for bent/leaking valves. also boroscoped the piston tops for damage. all good. did I mention the horseshoes. ![]() I credit the ARP rod bolts, a not-to-aggressive cam, and I think a bit of tire slip for dodging the bullet on this one. check out the video. be sure to turn up the volume, it still makes me cringe. YouTube - vintage 1967 porsche 911 / 912 drag racing 1/8 mile missed shift 10 ps. if you click on my other videos you'll see other races and an autocross whereI didn't embarass myself as much. pps. judging by the evidence this is a very effective way to clean out an engine, but not recommended. pps. I'm going back on Oct 3 to try again. I'll get that 'class winner' t-shirt or die trying. Last edited by haycait911; 03-09-2011 at 11:43 PM.. |

Your killing me!
The whole time reading I thought you blew the tranny. Didn't think about the money shift.

Nice bullet dodge. You may want to work on your reaction time.

I'm getting better. I'm down to under .7 sec, perfect is .5 so I'm not leaving too much on the table. my first one of the day was 1.6 sec.
asleep at the line I guess. counting this day, I've run a total of 10 times.yeah Jamie. blowing the tranny wouldn't bother me nearly as much as doing the engine. $1.5K vs. $10k + I'm surprised one of the little 901 CV's didn't let go. Last edited by haycait911; 09-17-2010 at 08:59 PM.. |

my 60' was right around 2 seconds. Et is around 9, 8.8 best to mid 9's ( without missing shifts
) and an end speed around 80 mph. this time the track was much slicker. the previous event my 60' were under 2 sec.

Go daddy..................from the video.
The crowd was with you. Did you buy a lottery ticket yet? Got lucky, if you can call a missed shift lucky.

jeez John, I was kind of hoping this thread would fade away.
![]() went racing again on sunday. did TERRIBLE. had my new induction set-up in place, and, contrary to what I was hoping, it killed my bottom end. and the top end wasn't that great either. bling intake runners for webers - more torque? anyway, had a little fun. usually there's about 25 cars racing, last day of the season, 90 cars show up. it was a zoo. when I saw a calloway twin turbo vette show up in my class, I figured I wouldn't be getting as t-shirt. won one race, second race it bogged off the start and that was that. on a brighter note, the kids and I had some fun the night before with spray paint. well, there's always next season. below is a pic of the car in fighting trim. Don. ![]()
