Smoking Engine - REALLY smokin'

guys - I looked at a 77 911S last week with 223K on the odometer - the engine was pouring out clouds of white smoke, but otherwise seemed to run OK - I decided to pass on the buy

- but what is the probable cause of such smoking;

I'm guessing rings - can't believe the guides would be able to pass that much oil

there are lots of reasons / causes...........worn out, over fill of the oil, crappy re-build, bla, bla
given the year ( 77 ) probably a good call to keep going. I like the SC / 3.0 ( 70-83 ) engined cars & early 911's ( 73 and earlier ).

I'd bet an overfill on oil.

It will probably smoke a while after the problem is fixed because oil pools in the heat exchangers and lasts there forever (figuratively).

This 86 Carrera (new to me) is smoking so bad I am concerned. I have the heater hose disconnected in the engine compartment and oily smoke just pours out. I know it takes some time but I am wondering if 'driving' is better than 'idling' to burn off the excess oil? This thing was leaking oil and I am sure that and my cleaning activitives are added to the mix.

If it were a MM rebuild, then that explains the smoke. And, it is a very good thing to walk away from!

price it for a rebuild at the worst, its driveable at the best.
