Backdate heat + oil pressure sender + A/C ?

I did a search and only found one thread regarding this subject. That thread didn't come to a resolution.

I'm attempting to backdate my heat ('79SC w/A/C). The oil pressure sending unit is in the way. I did find some pics (thanks Pazuzu) showing the unit tilted rearward, but my A/C bracket is in the way, not allowing it. There appears to be more than one type of A/C bracket.

I can't clearance the outlet, as it would almost have to be flattened to make room for the mini beer keg sized sender.

With the sender removed, the tin/outlet fits nicely. The hose tucks in and runs under the bracket. I would describe it as a perfect fit (not so for the driver's side ).

Do they make a smaller OP sending unit for our cars? Is there another location to mount the sender? Can I do it remotely at the other end of the oil return line (to valve cover)?

Here are some pics:

Stock set-up with A/C & tin removed.

Sending unit in way of new tin/outlet.

Sending unit removed. Tin/hose mounted. Red circle indicating where sender mounts.

A/C bracket mounted. Tin/hose in place. Red circle indicating where sender would sit if tilted rearward. Bracket is occupying the same space.

GIANT oil pressure sending unit.

maybe I stand corrected, because there's another sending unit just to the left, slightly below in your first pic.

sorry for the confusion.

Thinking out loud: Can I just get by with the pressure switch/light? There's no pressure guage on my 914/6...?

Danny,

You are using the wrong backdated heating duct for your set-up (with AC). Get the one that has plastic duct as shown in the picture below and your problem will be solved. HTH.

Didn't know they made another one.

Two questions:

1) Which one is it in the pic? Part #?

2) Will it clear my type of A/C bracket?

Backdated ducts......

Danny,

The gray painted heating ducts (left in pic) are similar to yours. The rest with black plastic ducts would work for your need. They are getting difficult to find these days.

And, Danny, the square block that the sender screws int rotates down when you loosen the bolt that holds it on. And where the heck did you get that a/c bracket? The good set-up would be backdate heat, update a/c.

I can't rotate the block rearward as the A/C bracket is in the way.

The A/C bracket came with the car. It's a '79SC ROW. I saw the newer(?) bracket from Pazuzu's thread, but he had issues with the outlet clearing the bracket. Six of one/half dozen other...

That's the type of one off my car, but I sold it. See how the sender is canted forward you should be able to find that bracket around here cheap (or free). How about a 3.2 bracket?

Changing out the bracket opens another can o' worms. 1) The heat duct I have won't fit and will require modification, and 2) my Sanden compressor might not bolt up. 3) My car is a 993 conversion. The slope of the hood requires the compressor to sit lower than normal. A different bracket might raise the compressor too high.

I have a R/H fiberglass block-off plate. I may as well drill a hole and glass in a duct if I have to do some modifying.

Since winter is coming, I'll just run without A/C and hope to find the correct ductwork as indicated by boyt911SC.

If you have the rh one, than go to lowes and get a 90˚ 1 1/2 pvc elbow and make your own custom one, like mine. Put it where it fits and glass it in.

Yep. That's what it's looking like unless I can find the correct ductwork.

911-106-036-00

Looks like they're still available, but pricey...

Update for those searching this thread in the future...

Talk about luck of the Irish! I took a peek under the hood of my 914/6 which has a '71 2.4l and there it was. The correct piece as shown in Tony's pic. Since the 914/6 has headers, it isn't necessary. In its place I installed the left-over block-off plate which was going to be sacrificed to custom-fab ducting for the 911.

So...if you want to keep A/C in a late-model car, when doing a heater back-date, you need an EARLY three-piece heat duct. Weird...

Thanks again, Tony.

Hence the term "back-date"...
