What makes my car backfire occasionally on startup...
The 69T occasionally (once every couple of months of daily driving), backfires at rifle shot levels when I start the car in the morning or evening when leaving work. It has happened about 4 times in 6 months, or roughly 300+ cold starts so it isn't exactly common.
I am just curious as to why it does it - I am not worried, in fact I kinda enjoy it when I get over the fright ![]() Possibly important information. It isn't where I park (always the same spot). It is summer here so at least 16-20 deg celcius every morning. I generally pump the accelerator a couple of times then crank it with the pedal slightly depressed. Generally it starts up first time every time, but will die if not held above ~1500rpm for 10-15 seconds. I have the original Marelli dizzy and it is in crap condition. Cam

If you pump the gas pedal a few times before you start it that could be what's causing your problem. Raw gas getting into the exhaust. You could blow out your exhaust system if your not careful

Yeah, I assume gas is getting in there somehow... when it does it, it runs for 1-2 seconds then BAAAAANG!
But if I were forced to guess, I would say it is when I DON't pump the gas pedal (carbed car) that I had the problem. Cam |

Well, if you can start the car without pumping the gas, do it and see if you still have the problem. If you do, then gas is getting into the intake of the enging.
Does it do it when the engine is cold, does it do it when the engine is hot, or doesn't it matter. Steve |
