Star wheel emergency brake - which direction tighten, loosen?

Bentley says DRIVER side, push screwdriver handle towards REAR of car (thus moving star wheel "ears" LEFTWARDS:

Looking thru hole, DRIVER side: TIGHTEN < |e|a|r|s| > LOOSEN

Is this correct or has Bentley screwed us again? Anyone with success actually tightening the brake shoes through the hole please give a yell.

Many thanks!

If you remove the brake disk an move the parking brake shoes back and forth, you can see how the unit works (for future reference). Old mechanic wisdom 'if it does not tighten up when turning to the left, try the other way'

Jdub,

While you are in there doing the rear brake could you confirm if the diagrams in Bentley pages 460-10 & -17 are correct? In #6 (Star wheel adjuster)..... it says that the diagram shown is for the right side (passenger side). I don't have my car at home and I'm trying to visualize the drawing. It gives me a perception of the driver side (left). Anyone out there please help. Thanks.

Tony

If you look at the backing plate (#2), it is 'open' to the left. SC brakes are on the forward side of the axle. So, rotate the Bentley manual 180˚ to the right and look at the diagram again. Now it's correct!!

Once you figure it out, dab a spot of paint on the end of the slot to show which way tightens it.... you'll never have to guess again.

James,

So the diagram or drawing in the Benley manual that says 'Right side shown' should say Left instead (????). Is that correct? Thanks.

yes! At least it is if you have a normal 911sc. It might be ok if you have a turbo or turbo-look car. But I don't think so. so yes I think the Bently manual got it wrong (l-r).

Yes the Bentley manual is wrong.

They did get it wrong - in my SC manual they claim moving the screwdriver handle towards the back tightens the emergency brake shoes - it is the opposite. What threw me was the fact that, while my passenger side star wheel rotates, the driver side does not want to budge. Since my prime reason for having the car up was to handle the axle shaft replacement (went great) this brake problem will have to wait for another day.

Great advice here. I do mark up my manuals plenty - I am a technical writer by trade so markup is second nature.
