Great job on the valve covers! They look awesome...

DaddyGlenn 01-31-2015 05:05 PM

Thanks David. I do like the way they turned out.

Tonight, I rebuilt the pedal cluster.

rennch 02-02-2015 02:31 PM

Glenn...that looks killer. Should have done that to mine. :)

JeremyD 02-02-2015 04:03 PM

It will be worth it Glenn!

MichiganMike 02-02-2015 05:47 PM

Wow, this is really coming together nicely! Looks like you were ready for the project!! Keep up the good work and forward progress.

jjeffries 02-02-2015 06:42 PM

Glenn, once the pedal assembly has been overhauled, as you've done, how much lateral play/wiggle is there when you hold the base and try to move the pedals from side to side? Is it minimal compared to "before"? Thanks, John in CT?

Hi John,

There is virtually no wiggle in the pedals now. It wasn't bad before. My pedal rebuild was primarily to take care of rust and replace a broken spring. But there really isn't any play.

Strygaldwir 02-06-2015 12:21 PM

I think the challenge is getting the pedal cluster remounted! Sequencing seems to be the key.

Good Job!

Keith

Dave Kost 02-07-2015 02:53 AM

Looks great Glenn!

Did you use Allegheny as the Powder Coater?

Who was the later?

Thanks,

Dave Kost 02-07-2015 02:54 AM

Oops….

Who was the Plater?

DaddyGlenn 02-07-2015 04:48 AM

Thanks Dave. Yes I did use Allegheny. Jason was great to work with. If/when I have more stuff to powder coat, it will go back there without a second thought.

Jason suggested Mance Plating which is just a few mile from them. It is a small shop that is a bit hidden. When I told Jason Mance would take 5-6 weeks to finish the job, he was surprised that it would be that fast. So we will have to wait and see how long it takes and what type of quality. I will post pictures when the parts are done.

Meanwhile, I am going to install the pedal cluster, e-brake and heater handles with new cables. Then I'll start rebuilding the ventilation system and repair/recover the dash. That should give Mance enough time to finish plating.

Tremelune 02-07-2015 05:02 AM

If you feel like documenting that e-brake, heater handle, and cable install...that's my next project, and I'm not sure how straightforward it is...

Will do!!

DaddyGlenn 03-07-2015 04:47 PM

Pedals are in and so is the E-brake handle.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425779196.jpg

Tremelune, the e-brake handle install was pretty straight forward. New heater cables go in from the tunnel and the e-brake cable from the rear of the car. Connect the cables to the handles and then bolt the handle in. Then go to the rear of the car and connect the cables and adjust accordingly.

I was done before I remembered to take pictures.

Today, I removed dents from my oil lines. Pretty cool process. I learned about it in this thread: Fixed my Crushed Oil line for $5 and a beer.

Definitely not perfect but a heck of a lot better.

Tomorrow, I am going to work on repairing rust on the front fenders.

DaddyGlenn 03-13-2015 02:54 PM

I picked up the parts from Mance Plating today. Not super happy with the appearance but I may have had unrealistic expectations.

The guy at Mance (his name slips my mind right now) said that the dichromate that makes it yellow is a coating on top of the cadmium plating and can be scratched off. He said some folks put a clear coat on it to protect the dichromate. Not sure if I buy that.

Anyway, here are a couple pictures....

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426286937.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426286955.jpg

Some of these bits will be visible so I may see what I can to to improve their look. But ultimately I got them plated for the protection and wouldn't have expected them to stay pretty for long since this will be a daily driver.

Next time I need plating done, I'll go back to East Liberty Electroplating for yellow zinc.

PorscheAmateur 03-13-2015 04:02 PM

Just read through all this, and all i can say is wow. You definetly are doing a great job with this car. Good luck!

Buechsen Gustl 03-14-2015 07:30 AM

Definitely a big effort so far.... I already subscribed and will follow til the end ;-)

DaddyGlenn 03-14-2015 02:57 PM

Only had a few hours today but it feels like I made some progress.

Got the valves adjusted and pretty valve covers on.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426373588.jpg

Painted the marks on the crankshaft pulley.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426373684.jpg

Installed the fan housing and some sheet metal.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426373752.jpg

DaddyGlenn 03-21-2015 05:29 AM

Heater valves look like new...except for the spring

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426944311.jpg

And they tried to match Talbot Yellow for the fan but didn't get close enough.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1426944388.jpg

I think I will ask them to just do it over in the red.

DaddyGlenn 05-18-2015 06:00 PM

update

Making progress.

Fenders are finally yellow and even with all the curves, I only have a couple minor runs that I will sand down enough to live with.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1432000161.jpg

Did a bit of touch up paint on the left side where I had a real bad run and had to sand down until you could see primer. And guess what? After my success with the fenders I was overconfident and frickin' did it again. But I'm tired of painting and repainting so I have sanded the run very carefully and I think i can live with the results for a while.

While I was painting, I sprayed a couple coats on the fan and it looks much better in the right shade of yellow. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1432000666.jpg

And I've begun the installation of the oil cooler duct.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1432000484.jpg

jsoderbe 05-18-2015 10:38 PM

Hi Glenn, honeslty that plating does not look good. At least my CAD plating was very shiny.

Great to see progress, I have been folloving your endeavour.... :-)

Regards,

Johan

DaddyGlenn 05-19-2015 02:12 AM

Thanks Johan. I could not have done any of this without the resources available on this board.

Glenn

preston_brown 05-20-2015 06:22 PM

You're gonna finish her up and drive her soon, and then it will all be worth it. Nice work Glenn.

DaddyGlenn 08-17-2015 06:17 PM

I am so delinquent in my updates. Sorry guys.

So since my last update, I've made some good progress.

Oil cooler duct is in.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1439863607.jpg

I repainted much of the body, finished painting the rest of the bolt-on bits and have decided that the remaining (and new) imperfections in my paint are not enough to hold me up anymore. So I declared my painting done, tore down the makeshift paint booth and have set my sights on the interior.

Tonight, I began preparing to install the headliner.

First to replace the foam filter in the vents above the rear window I used a length of air conditioning weather seal.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1439863896.jpg

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1439863929.jpg

I cut the length a couple inches longer than needed to insure a good seal at the ends.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1439863962.jpg

Starting in the middle I flattened the foam against the roof and slide it in, careful not to let it twist. If you do it right, it fills the space perfectly.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1439864018.jpg

At the ends, push the extra in as neatly as possible.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1439864061.jpg

And from the outside...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1439864097.jpg

Yes, I know, I sill have to sand out the orange peel on the roof.

DaddyGlenn 08-17-2015 06:36 PM

Once to foam was in, I installed the sound and heat insulation on the roof. I am using Second Skin products. In the last post, you can see the Damplifier I placed to dampen panel vibration. According to NineBall, you do not need total coverage just 25-40%.

On top of that goes a second layer. This time I used their Heatwave product. It is a fiber sound insulation sandwiched between foil. This layer should keep the noise down and provide heat insulation too.

For the install, I cut a piece slightly larger than needed and attached it to the roof with spray on adhesive.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1439864841.jpg

I started with a 18" wide band of adhesive down the middle, leaving the ends and edges free. Spray both the roof and the insulation, wait a minute for it to tack then press in place.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1439864948.jpg

Then I worked my way around the edges, trimming and gluing as I went. For this layer of insulation, you want total coverage. So I cut it such that I could tuck the insulation behind the metal where the roof meets the windows. I did cut a 1 inch gap at the rear vents to maintain that functionality.

Once done, i installed the headliner bows to test the fit.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1439865158.jpg

Feeling pretty good right about now. :D SmileWavy

preston_brown 08-18-2015 06:15 AM

That looks like a really nice job. Good work!

DaddyGlenn 08-22-2015 03:10 PM

Another good day.

I was able to get the headliner in, stretched tight as a drum and the front and rear glued. Tomorrow, I'll finish gluing.

this was before final tightening. There are no wrinkles left.

Thank you very much. That is the illusion I was going for.

There is a reason I won't post the pictures of it in progress. :D

JeremyD 08-23-2015 01:34 PM

looks great Glenn

Sebscst 08-23-2015 04:30 PM

Nice work. Subscribed

DaddyGlenn 08-23-2015 04:42 PM

Good weekend.

Headliner is in. Still need to do the A and B pillars.

Got the trunk all cleaned up and returned the headlight wiring harnesses to their original routing.

Replaced the fuel tank vent lines.

Flipped the wipers and they are ready for install. Reattached the engine pad.

Painted the engine lid latch to cover the ugly cadmium plating.

Fabricated grills for the engine lid.

And collected a pile of stuff to take to the powder coater.

Tomorrow, I'll call and check on the progress of my seat and dash upholstery.

DaddyGlenn 09-01-2015 04:31 PM

Good news and not so good news

First the not so good....

The parts I planned to powder coat took a detour... to see what it would take to re-anodize them. The not so bad news is that it would take more time, effort and money than I am willing to invest. Back to plan "A", powder coat.

And the good news...

I was finally able to pick up my recovered dash. Beautiful job and no seems. Here is a picture but it doesn't do it justice.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1441153832.jpg

Long weekend coming up. I hope to make good progress.

gregwils 09-07-2015 04:01 AM

Glenn - Dash looks great. Was it done locally?

Morning Greg. It was done by John Carey Automotive Upholstery in Bridgeville. He is still working on my seats. Can't wait to see how they come out.

I've been making progress this weekend. I got wiper system installed and the A and B pillars done. I repaired the dash attachment points and got it installed. And did a little color sanding on the front fenders.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1441633482.jpg

Now I'm in the middle of rebuilding and installing the ventilation system.

Hawkeye's-911T 09-07-2015 09:43 AM

Good job Glenn. Your work sure does make me realize, Man, I gotta long way to go!

Cheers
JB

DaddyGlenn 10-12-2015 01:32 PM

Nice three day weekend for me! Great weather and a bunch of progress made.

Front fenders, bumper and valance are on. I had to adjust the mounts for the oil cool from where I thought it should have been. So that slowed me down but the oil cooler now lines up nicely with the opening in the valance.

I got the ventilation system reinstalled, including a new drain hose from the fresh air intake.

Cleaned the transmission and replaced the gaskets on the nose and shift fork that had been leaking. Mated the engine and transmission and got them bolted in the car. I still have to make all the connections. But that is a big milestone, freed up some room in the garage and answered a really big question.....

Ever since I rebuilt the suspension, I have been wondering how well I did at hitting my target ride height. Now that the front fenders are on and the engine and transmission are back in, I could get a rough measurement.

Target is 25 1/2" to the front fender lip and 25" at the rear. And today the measurements were... drum roll please....

25 1/2" front and 25 3/4" rear! A little high in the back but not too bad. I still have to install the glass, interior, and a couple body panels, etc. so I expect it to drop a bit more. So I'm happy with how it sits for now.

Time to celebrate. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

Obligatory pictures....
