Looks good Glenn.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your fuel lines? OEM or custom? It's a project I'd like to tackle sooner than later.

JeremyD 07-25-2012 05:17 AM

Hey Glenn - what are you using for a welder? Looks good!

DaddyGlenn 07-25-2012 07:31 AM

I got OEM fuel lines from our host and my welder is a Millermatic 140 and I use an 80/20 CO2/Argon mix as a shielding gas.

DaddyGlenn 08-26-2012 04:33 PM

Another milestone reached today. I finished priming the body. Bolt-on panels are next.

That's a huge milestone Glenn. Congratulations.

JeremyD 08-27-2012 03:57 AM

Yea Glenn!

DaddyGlenn 09-02-2012 04:53 PM

It has now been two years since I started the fiasco, I mean project. I guess I've made some progress. This weekend, I am starting to strip and prime the bolt on parts. So far I've got the doors, engine lid and hood down to the zinc. Tomorrow I will strip the fenders, weld up a little crack in one door and get some primer on the doors.... I hope.

To see what I've been dealing with, here is a photo progression of stripping the hood.

First coat of paint remover and covered with plastic.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1346633114.jpg

After letting it sit for an hour, I pulled the plastic and took a razor blade to it. This is what it looked like when I was done. The most recent respray was 99% off. What you see left is the original color and the first respray. the paint was softened but not enough to scrape off.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1346633321.jpg

After another application of paint remover under plastic it looked much better.

Ready to scrape.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1346633405.jpg

What was left would easily come off with the wire wheel.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1346633455.jpg

The same multi-step process was required on both doors and the engine lid. Sigh...

Great Job Glenn !!!

Done with the bondo on the tub... here are a few shots.

Next for the tub is more primer, then color. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat3.gif

Very nice work! You doing the painting as well?

I'm gonna give it a good try.

Glenn,

Funny as it may sound from someone who's driving their car, those pics make me nostalgic. I really enjoyed the body work.

Everything looks pretty good, but I have to say, your door gap in the corner looks like it tightens up a little. A little more primer and paint and it could be too close. Can you round that out a little more? I know I had to do a lot of 'shaping' in the corners.

Could just be the angle of the photo too.

Mike

Just FYI,

The valance you are looking at above may cause you some issues where there are any "dips" i.e., driveways, intersections.

Glad you like bodywork, 'cause I frickin' hate it. I'd rather turn a wrench any day.

Regarding the gap... it may be the angle. I'll take a closer look when the sun comes up. Any recommendations on how big the gap should be pre-primer/paint?

Thanks for the heads up. I'll get the measurements prior to ordering.

DaddyGlenn 09-23-2012 02:00 PM

Gaps are pretty consistent all around the doors. So I shouldn't have an issue.

Took the doors off, cleaned it up, tape & paper and shot some more primer this weekend.

Next is to sand with 220.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1348437553.jpg

500_19B 09-24-2012 09:27 AM

Looking good! Don't forget to remove the tailight housings prior to shooting the top coats.

For the door gap, I would fashion a go/no-go gauge out of wood and size it for the gap as it is on the straight portion of the door's trailing edge. Keep the gauge narrow, and they you can use it to check the gap all the way around the curve. Looking at the picture I had the same first impression... it looks too tight around the curve. If that really is the case, then the effort to perfect it now will be well worth it, as this is the kind of thing that can grow to bug you later.

DaddyGlenn 01-17-2013 05:38 PM

Wow, its been a while since I updated this thread.

I didn't get color on the tub before the weather got too cold. It will have to wait for spring. So I've been working a a bunch of different tasks.

Cleaning the glue off the interior... work in progress
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358475546.jpg

Lowering and moving back the passenger side seat mount... also in progress (no pictures yet) But hey I learned something... in searching for high quality drill bits I learned that if you don't use your drill at full speed but rather let it turn slowly, the bits work better and don't overheat and lose their edge. When I think of the money I spent replacing drill bits 'cause I didn't know to go slow...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat5.gif

and the other day, I started another task... back in my comfort zone.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358475877.jpg

As you can see, I have oil leakage on the right side. I can't tell for sure where it came from but I suspect a couple places. I have ordered gaskets etc to reseal the cam chain cover, the oil pressure sender and to temp sender.

It also looks like I have a leaky #8 bearing seal (behind the pulley). So that will be replaced, too.

When I first dropped the engine about 7-8 years ago, I gave it a good cleaning and fixed all the leaks in the triangle of death. I couldn't get to the bottom of the engine since I didn't have a stand at that time. I do now so I am tackling the bottom while I wait for my next Pelican shipment. Lots of gunk here.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358476212.jpg

I've got about half done in the picture. Not going for perfection. Just want to be able to see if I spring any new leaks.

I'll try to document my oil leak repairs.... maybe here or perhaps another thread.

Oh, and I got another car. Picked up a 2000 BMW 740iL Sport in great shape. Wheeee :D

DaddyGlenn 01-19-2013 03:49 PM

I got the bottom of the engine cleaned and replaced the sump plate gaskets with new silicon gaskets. No surprises peeking up inside the crankcase.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358642544.jpg

Then I turned my attention to the mess on the front. Got the oil lines removed and cleaned up the outside. I think my oil leak was at the block that the oil pressure sender screws into. I seemed way too loose. But I will proceed with my plan to address all suspect areas.

All clean.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358642715.jpg

Then off with the cam chain cover. Everything looks good on the inside.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358642845.jpg

The cam chain cover gasket was dry, no signs of oil seeping by anywhere.

rennch 01-19-2013 04:15 PM

Love these threads. Great job Glenn.

DaddyGlenn 01-21-2013 07:58 AM

It feels good to make progress. Still working on oil leaks.

Pulley off so I can see the mess.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358786811.jpg

And after some cleaning and removing the intermediate shaft cover. (The gasket looked like it might have been leaking a bit.)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358786946.jpg

I removed the gasket residual with a razor blade and wiped it down with mineral spirits. The on with the new gaskets, cover plates and new washers and nuts. I couldn't find a torque value for the intermediate shaft nuts so I used the same value at required for the cam chain covers, 7 ft/lbs. If this is incorrect, let me know.

Here she is all buttoned up.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1358787202.jpg

I've got the garage heater running and the parts washer heating up while I write this. So today I will focus in cleaning the engine tin. I forgot to order the seals for the oil lines for the cam chain tensioner so I'll just clean those and set them aside until the next package arrives.

rwilner 02-21-2013 04:46 AM

Glenn,
What a great thread. Any updates?

Your goal should be to drive it to hershey this year!

Progress is slow as time and money are in short supply. but I try to do a little every day.

I am slowly blasting all the paint off the engine tin to prepare it for powder coating. Can't decide if I want gloss black or matte black.

Thanks to the heater fan motor falling apart in my hands, I've decided to backdate the heater.

I am also looking at options to rebuild or replace the engine wiring harness.

With regard to the Hershey Swap meet.... I scored big last year (see post #108 of this thread) and I am already making my shopping list for this year. Unfortunately, there is no way it will be done by then. Given the slow progress I am making, my project plan, which keeps being adjusted, has it being completed in March 2014. But that will probably slip, too.

Hawkeye's-911T 02-21-2013 10:57 AM

Hi Glenn

I've viewed your thread with interest (& Kristoph's Saving The Rat) as you have tackled a number of issues I have or will be facing in the future of my project. Thanks for the time & effort you put into keeping us all updated. Your thread is very informative & is a helpful resource base.

Cheers
JB

DaddyGlenn 02-21-2013 11:57 AM

Thanks JB. I love to share info. (My Mom secretly wishes I was a college professor ... like Kristoph.) It is great to hear that folks can learn from my experience as I do from others here. If it weren't for PP, I doubt many of us would tackle some of the projects we take on.

P.S. I like your Jefferson quote. I'm a big fan of TJ.

DaddyGlenn 02-24-2013 09:21 AM

Definition of a project: One "while I'm in there" task after another.

Noticed the insulation on my engine wiring harness was stiff and cracking. That means strip the harness from the engine and replace it.

I the process I moved the vacuum line for the brakes and SNAP...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1361729077.jpg

Guess I should replace all the rubber lines.

I had planned on cleaning the WUR and since I'm replacing the wiring harness and all the rubber hoses...I might as well pull the CIS and clean it up, too.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1361729263.jpg

Maybe a dozen bolts and I could remove the shroud and clean that up and inspect underneath.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1361729340.jpg

That's as far as I go. I will not cross the line into a engine rebuild.

On another note. I have decided to shift my interior plans a tad. I had originally planned to recover the stock seats and a set of Corbeau buckets I bought and just switch them out for AX/DE events. After experiencing stock sport seats, I think I can get by with just one set of sport seats.

So my stock seats and Corbeau seats are for sale (see post #17 for a picture) and I am in the market for a pair of manual sport seats that need to be reupholstered.

In case anyone is still following... I haven't made much progress lately. I have been able to grab 10-15 minutes here and there and in that time this is what I'm doing....

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1365813074.jpg

Blasting engine tin and other parts so they can be powder coated or zinc plated.

Done so far...

Good productive weekend! Got the exterior "shop" set up.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369697896.jpg

Fabricated the seat mount bracket for the passenger side. My welding skills improved since I did the driver's side.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369698036.jpg

Picked up a TRE valance I bought from another Pelican.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369698523.jpg

And finally, cleaned up the pedal area and gave it a good coat of POR-15.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1369698677.jpg

so, a good weekend. :)

Next is to finish stripping the glue off the rear of the interior.

This was a North Carolina car for most of its life. I had it in Florida for 5 years before we moved to Pittsburgh.

Hey Glenn, Fantastic Job!!

At first look, I was thinking that you were spending your precious time to vacuum this red box, so it looks clean inside :D

OP seems surprised. Was this rust something the OP didn't notice when he bought the car? The first photo looked like the door sill. Was this not visible when he bought it?

In general, should a Sc/3.2 newbie be worried about thinking he's buying a decent car, and then "finding out" that the car has rust issues and he's in way over his head (or needs to write a check for $10,000 to make this problem go away)

KNS 06-24-2013 05:19 PM

My previous 1980 911SC which spent its whole life in southern California and Arizona had some rust hiding in the usual spots. The later cars rust too...

andy_uranium 06-25-2013 02:42 AM

Looking good in that yellow! Great build thread, thanks for sharing! One question, about painting outside, how do you protect the car from wind born dust? Or do you just pick a calm day to do it?
