Auto heat - option on 87 Coupe?

Hi there,

I am going to be troubleshooting my heater blower soon (starting to cool off) but in my quest for info and schematics I notice reference to "auto heat" and in fact the factory owners manual talks about it as well.

But my car clearly does not have it, it has manual levers between the seat and a rotary dial switch (which I assume is for the blowers) that goes from 0 to 3.

The manual references a dial with 0-9 I think?

Anyhow, was auto heat an option on 1987 or is the fact mine is an early build (10/86) relevant?

Thanks as always,

Jon

I'm still working on figuring out my heat/air system. But from what I understand, the rotary dial switch between the seats and behind the manual levers is the auto heat. I haven't really used it yet.

Auto Heat.

Jon & Kipp

Page 800-6 of the Bentley covers some Auto Heat Troubleshooting hints.

You will need to be more specific regarding your concerns.

Also, Google Porsche Auto Heat.

I was just looking in my Bentley and I'm not sure I have the Auto Heating now either. I do not have the "passenger compartment temperature sensor" as described on page 800-3 and my "temperature control knob" only has five positions ( 0-1-?-2-3 ). Not nine as described by Jon above.

Here is what you have.

No Auto Heat.

Good luck,

Gerry

Thanks Gerry. Pretty much what I figured. I do have a "supplement" card to the owners manual that shows 4 positions on the dial to control blower speed.

Thanks, Gerry,

My specific concern at this point is that what my car seems to have is not the same as what the bentley manual shows on 800-6..... in other words, no auto heat?

Was this likely removed then and backdated to an earlier carrera style?

Really just trying to figure out what I am starting with.

Sorry for my confusion. I do like the illustrations that Gerry included above, most excellent, should have been included in the owners manual!

The heating system you describe, is the "standard" heating configuration.

Th "Auto Heat" was an option since, I think, the late 70's.

Here's our window sticker.

Good luck,

Gerry

Here is a scan of my "Supplement" card that is tucked in with my owners manual.

The biggest advantage of your configuration, is that each passenger can adjust his/her footwell heat independently with the floor mounted levers.

Thanks, guys!

It's all starting to all make sense. I will have to check the schematic to see if makes sense too..... too late tonight.

Good news is I went t a party tonight and was out late, when we went to the car it had FROST on the windsheild..... luckily enough hot air blew through the non-functioning blowers to defrost the windsheild? Does that even make sense? Does the heat "intake" still come from the pressurized portion of the engine fan shroud?

Suddenly the heater backdate is starting to make a whole lot of sense, too....!

I love this car but it sure has some quirks... most things make sense in a strange sort of way, but the heat and A/C systems sure are something!

Thanks again guys. Awesome help.

0-9 with no levers is "auto"heat.

0-X ( less than 9) with levers is not-auto heat.....
