Want to replace my sideview mirrors
 

I dont particularly like the big sideview mirrors - if they should come off what is under the base of these mirrors? I want to replace them with some nice older style pieces. Anyone have some photos of there Porsche (same vintage - '77) with other mirrors. Any photos of what is under the base of these - large gaping hole or screw holes?

The earlier style mirror, the Durant you show in the bottom picture or the rectangular 72/73, 74/75, will not fit over the holes exposed from your old mirror--see below:

The earlier mirrors have the same size base as the one in your bottom photo and use only two holes that are smaller and, I believe, of different spacing than any used by your original mirror. To do it "right", you'll need to fill the old holes, paint the patch, and re-drill holes for the earlier mirrors. There may be other options, but you'd see it wasn't "stock" if that matters.

Also, if you have power mirrors, along with the mirror de-foggers, there will be a harness inside the door.

You can make base gaskets big enough to cover the factory holes. Cut some aluminum big enough to cover the stock holes from the factory mirrors.

No one has ever mentioned noticing, it just looks like a larger base gasket.

These are the 72-73 mirrors. You have to drill a 1/2" hole from the inside of the drivers door, to be able to get the allan wrench acess to the mounting screws in right.

I did this as a temporary fix to cover the stock holes. It is easily reversible.

I added 1/4" to the 72 mirrors base gasket as a template, I traced the template onto alu sheet, cut it out and smoothed the edges.

I then drilled mounting holes through the templates to match the mirror bases. Then I formed the alu gaskets to the car and marked the new mounting holes.

I drilled the mounting holes into the car. On the drivers side two access holes have to be drilled so that you can get an Allen wrench on the mounting bolts. On the pass side it is not needed to drill additional holes from the inside of the door.

I used some black laminate on the alu so it matches the rubber gasket.

Put it all in place and bolt it down.

I really like this Mod. What do you mean by 'black laminate'? I wonder if it would work with some Talbots?

I just knew someone would ask me that.;) Black Laminate sounded better than black tape. It is holding up well.SmileWavy

I used thick 3M Black tape, and stretched it really good around the edge of the metal gasket.

Also when you drill your new mounting holes on the drivers side, you have to make sure that the mirror is as far forward as you can get it, while still covering the stock holes. If you don't then the rear most mounting hole will have to go through two sections of your door shell. I'll post a picture of the holes later.

I am not pleased with the way this turned out on the inside of the door. I am posting so that other may see my mistakes and do it better.

Please take note of the two small dimples circled in orange in the photo. I think the dimples are the factory markings for the old style mirror.

I hadn't noticed the dimples prior to my experiment.

I do not know, but perhaps the mirror will fit using the factory marked dimples, and still cover the outer door skin later factory holes. If I was to do this again I would make sure that the mirror was as far forward and as high as I could get it while still ensuring that the outer holes were covered.

Just finished the chrome mirror backdate with your template on my '75 and it came out great. Thank you now my 911s Targa looks original.

Thanks for sharing. I'll put this on my maybe-some-day list. Not sure that I'll ever do this mod (although I don't care for my big flags either), but I appreciate your capacity to dive into it and then explain it to the rest of us. I have a targa top core in my garage just waiting for me to get off the fence on your lexan skin mod.

Work, wife, kids and garage time: it's a balancing act. Or a juggling act. All good.

I had this thread bookmarked for some time. Today I removed my cup-mirrors, and it can be done with the existing holes. Two new holes have to be drilled for the new mirror. The gaskets of my reproduction mirrors fit over de existing holes (barely!).

Sorry for digging up and old thread but appreciate the update. Sid86, where did you get your reproduction mirror and what is the model?

Why not use the Vitaloni Sebring mirror? This mirror was used on all Porsche 934, 935, 936, 956, 962 and possibly more. They are cheap (around $90), and you can use the flag mirror base, so no drilling in the doors. Search for Vitaloni Sebring on this forum, and you will find a lot of pics!
