Porsche . . . . There Is NO Substitue

The only thing worst for OTHER sports car enthusiast to see in their rear view mirror than flashing red lights from highway patrol, is the reflection of true sports car perfection

There is no substitute

That's pretty funny because i was restoring a 1975 TR6 for three years before i got fed up and somebody made me an offer i couldn't refuse !

I'm sure glad i welcomed a 1989 Carrera Coupe instead ... lol

Cheers

C'mon....

The '6 is still a very nice car (especially if one gets rid of all the US-spec emissions junk). And Group 44 had some notable racing success.

And it is less panic inducing when one finds oneself entering a turn too fast (there is something to be said for front-engine understeer). You can probably guess how I know this.

Sure the 911 is a very different car, but the comparison is a bit "apples & oranges". Remember that the TR6 was largely based on previous TR models.

And I do sometimes miss my TR6....and my TR3A.....and even my TR8.

Sports car guys (and gals) with passion for older iron may have different cars, but all should be respected as enthusiasts. It takes a special kind of dedication (and masochism?) to maintain an old Brit sports car.

I had me a TR6, way back when I was in my early 20's and i have to admit, it was a pretty fun car. I was warned about the trouble an English car can give you but mine didn't give me a lick of trouble.

My first car at 16 years old was a TR-3a what fun I had with that car.

I started with an 1971 MG Midget, back in 1971, then a 1964 TR4, followed by a 1971 GT6+, between those and my VW bugs and bus........that's how i learned how to work on cars.

Regards,

Yep, old 911's are great cars. I grin ear to ear every time I hop in mine and take it for a spin. But, it's that "my car is better than your car" elitist attitude that comes along with them that I can't stand. It's the reason I stopped going to the local PCA gatherings.

Any time I see ANY classic car on the road I smile because it is another automotive enthusiast like me preserving a piece of history. There is a reason that TR6 is still on the road just like your 911. It has character. Try to appreciate it for what it is.

With a TR, you have to realize that the body of the car is most of the suspension; "Classic Cowl Shake". ha.

That straight 6 sounds great, though. (The TR6 body was designed by Karmann!)

Since this is becoming something of Triumph thread .. I had a Spitfire back in the day. When a 911 was completely out of reach to me as a teenager - and something of an odd car in my eyes. Loved the way the hood opened up in the TR and taking the top down always made for a fun ride. Then one day I heard a 911 and it changed everything for me. But that was after the Spitfire was gone.

+1. All old cars are cool. They all have soul. Drive it. Fix it. Drive it some more. We all do that and we all do it at about the same speed. Once on the track, the person with the most money wins, but it's not a car that you'd drive on the street.

I had a 74 Spitfire. I go it for free. Full of rust, no interior, not motor. I had great plans for a 12B Mazda rotary motor and a thorough rebuild. Then realized that I'd have hundreds of hours in to the project and over 8K invested, so I bought a 911 SC instead. Sold the free car for $400. No regrets.

Yes I am a fan of most old cars. Well, the cool ones anyway.

I had a Euro spec 1972 Fiat 124 Sport Spider before my 911, and man it was a great car. I hammered the hell out of it, and the thing was really responsive and rewarding to drive.

However, I am glad I went Porsche, it has more outright performance potential, and that is what I am really after.

But I will still give a thumbs-up to anything from an old Triumph to an old muscle car. Old motorcycles are cool too.

Man, I really love some of the sentiment on this thread.

As much as we like our 911's, many of have owned and worked on other hardware, and I'm sure some still do. Life is too short to be devoted to just one brand of motorized toy.

And some of us like working on them as much (if not more) then driving them. When one project is finished, then it's time to enjoy the fruits of our labor for awhile.......until the idea for a new project takes over (a.k.a. the Peter Egan syndrome).

I had a '69 GT6+ in high school. I liked the car a lot but the reliability of my 5 year old Triumph vs. my 26 year old Porsche probably explains why you see more classic P-cars than Triumphs on the roads these days.

Hey - that looks alot like my TR. Mine is a yellow '69 - but with vintage Western brand aluminum wheels (although I have new panosports that I am going to put on it). From the look of that one - I would guess it is an early one also. Great car. I've had it since I was 16.

It is due for a new top and a paint job - but rebuilding my 930's engine and all the other while you are in there things - got in the way of that. The TR will have to wait a year or two.

They are really a fun car to drive. Mine was a european delivery - so it didn't have any smog stuff on it. Really torquey and fun to drive. I have driven quite a few later ones that don't begin to have the power that mine does.

It truely is an apples and oranges comparison. It's sort of like asking which of your kids you like the best. They may be different but you love them equally.

Jeb
