Clutch symptoms
I think I need a new clutch. The one I have has about 35,000 miles on it, here are the symptoms: (1) It squeals when cold or if I shift at high rpms.
(2) Today I went for a drive and I noticed my clutch pedal was hard, putting the car in first gear became difficult. (3) It really is the last half inch of pedal travel that matters now. So, do I need a new clutch, or maybe just adjusting it?

Start with adjusting, lubricating the pedal assembly, clutch cable. you didn't say it was slipping, a dead giveaway. Might also be the transmission.

Possibly the clutch but I suspect the throw-out bearing based on the squeal when engaging the pedal. It may be on it's way out.
Luckily, a new one comes in the clutch kit sold by Pelican. ![]() IOW, the clutch needs to come out to replace the TO bearing so you may was well install all new bits.

Transmission was rebuilt recently, I doubt it is bad already. The clutch does not really slip, but makes that squeal sound sometimes.

My engine is going to spend the winter in the garage it looks. And a PP clutch kit will be my Christmas present. That is fine, I have an oil leak to fix too.

I installed the SACHS "Power" kit and it has worked well for me.

Aurel:
I am no expert, but it sounds like your spring is not doing its job since you said pedal was hard, and not too responsive with getting into. Just a thought. Is this the engine which was rebuilt a few years ago? 1978 3.0L?

If you noticed a sudden change in pedal height engagement, suspect the roll pin or end bushing in the pedal cluster. If they have never been serviced, it is a good idea to replace the factory $1 part before it fails and you have no clutch.

TibetanT: yes, same engine, still running strong. Maybe too strong for the clutch
![]() Psalt: I did rebuild my pedal cluster two years ago, hopefully it is still good. This morning I readjusted my clutch cable for more travel and less spring tension. The pedal feels a lot better, and first-reverse gears get in smoothly on the driveway.I may get another season out of this clutch after all. Next drive will tell for sure.
