question, bamboo floor

I need to do my floor on concrete and here is the dilemma. Laminate doesn't look as nice. Solid and engineer wood is too complicated regarding subfloor. According to some pro, if the concrete is somewhat moisture, engineer wood is ok, but if the concrete is too much moisture, engineer is not ok. Now bamboo. Anyone has any knowledge on bamboo floor. I used to hate the bamboo floor look but I've recently seen some good looking bamboo floor.

It's illegal to have combustible flooring in a garage.

I think he means for the floorboards in his 911.

They did use bamboo staves in the hoods of the 911R, so he may be onto something!

Use a epoxy type floor with chips of color in it. Or use what I use, dirt with fir needle on it.

That's pretty good. With the brown bamboo, it'll hide the oil drips.

I just spent $5K to have bamboo floors laid in my slab rancher. So far, a ton of buckling, due to a lot of moisture coming through the concrete slab. You will want to find a floating floor. I speak from very expensive experience.

I've been round and round this idea in my head for a long time. Finishing my home remodel(every sq. Ft. Done by hand) is what's been keeping me from starting work on the 911. Since I have some welding in store I think I'm going to stick with just the plain old slab. Maybe when I finish her I'll drop in some VCT. Until them...
Bamboo? I second the poster above. Very finicky material, bad idea on the slab.

Why do you say that?

I work for a construction manager in NYC and mostly build high rise residential buildings (25 - 45 stories). We install engineered and solid wood floors over concrete all the time.

I have engineered oak flooring in my house which is on top of a concrete slab. No problems so far after 3 years.

Just reinforcing what Tsunamiboy said, in case someone is thinking "what a nifty idea, a hard-wood garage floor".

To the best of my knowledge all building codes require non-combustible garage floors; the only exception being an asphalt parking surface is allowed on the "ground level" of IBC S-2 parking garages (pleasure vehicles only), this exception is not available for garages attached to one and two family dwellings.

I may be wrong...but I don't think he is talking about installing wood flooring in his garage. I think he meant to post this in the off topic forum.

If you can do a wood floor, this style is very nice:

Woodblock Flooring

Industrial End Grain Wood Block Flooring - Jennison Wright Co.

Being in the concrete business I know moisture can be a real issue in residential type slabs. You have to use different mix designs and prep accordingly if you are going to use adhesives or the flooring material is in direct contact with the slab. Concrete no matter how smooth it appears is pourous allowing moisture to permeate from the sub-base. If you want something that is totally care free look up some decorative concrete firms, they can dye or stain your existing floors in just about any color or pattern. They can also seal it to protect against drips and spills.

Very cool!!!

I've made quite a bit of money for my employers disposing of flooring of this type in old automotive manufacturing facilities. It is VERY good flooring if you're on your feet for long periods of time. It does a great job of absorbing impact. But, it also absorbs liquids very well. As in environmentally hazardous liquids which makes disposal expensive. And water, which makes it buckle. In a home garage though it would be great!

Thanks for sharing the link, I didn't know you could still buy this stuff.
