Question Dangling Wire in Dash

Need some help, went to remove my speedo so I can send it off to get repaired, and when I pulled it out I saw this wire behind the gauges hooked to nothing! Should it be hooked to something?! If anyone can tell me where this one goes I will be really impressed! 8-) I tried to follow the wire, and it seemed to go down right below the rpm gauge, but not for sure! Also, anyone have a good way to tag the wires on the speedo, so I know how to reconnect them when I get it back?! It is a lot of wires, and I do not want to screw it up! Oh, and how do I disconnect that damn shift light indicator?! ha!

Oh, the pic is taken with the speedo out, and the rpm would be to your left while sitting in the car...

Thanks!

Rod

It looks like a ground wire.

check your wires on the back of your gauge: there are two terminals that each have 3 wires on them and I seem to recall one set being a ground set of brown wires.
I just did mine not too long ago. I sent mine to North Hollywood Speedo and they were outstanding in terms of service and workmanship.

I will check that now.......... I am planning on sending them the speedo! How did you tag your wires, so you could make sure to put them back properly, looking for a good way....

Ok, I took a look, I count 6 wires 3 pairs of 2, a large white plug, and the 3 wires going to the bulbs. Next to the white plug there is a space that has nothing attached, but not sure if something SHOULD be attached there?!

Thanks!

These photos might help. It looks like all the guage wires are grouped and come out of harnesses. The wire you asked about appears to be solo. Also I don't see an individual ground that has that type connector. So I'm thinking is goes somewhere other than the guages.

The best way I can think of for marking the wire bundles is to wrap each wire or bundle of wires with a piece of tap and mark each piece with a number. then either mark the same number directly on the back of the gauge next to each connection, or put pieces of tape on the back of the gauges and mark those up if you don't want to mark up the gauges themselves.

I have an '84 and just last night pulled the instruments out.
Assuming you can rule out the fact it is a ground from the speedo.. there is a group of brown ground wires under the dash, just to the right of the steering column (as you are facing the steering wheel). There is a welded ground spade on the steering column tub that has one of those ugly looking multi-spade connector clusters that are connected to the ground under the dash. See if it looks like there is an empty lug there.

I have wires slipping out of connectors left and right now that I am into it. Good luck.

As long as you are sending them your speedometer, you can have them make a new face blocking off the shift light.
