For those who installed a CHT gauge
Did you install CHT with the sensor located under the spark plug? If so, what sensor you used and what did you have to do to make it fit? Seemed there is virtually no room for the sensor in the spark plug hole.
Here is the sensor I am thinking of. Dakota Digital - Digital Instrumentation and Accessories thanks, anthony |

You either bend the tab after slipping it over the plug or attach it to a bolt near the head.

I had a custom Westach CHT/Volt meter made to replace my clock. The termocouple resembled the one you posted a link to.
If YOU can't get it in with the plug, bolt it to something near the head. It will give you close to the reading you need....

Search out RoninLB....he has a CHT and EGT both installed....I think he has a serious small aircraft background. Might be able to give good advice on this topic.

I think RoninLB (or somebody, anyway) had a CHT gauge in the cabin, and thermocouples under each spark plug. The CHT was switchable, so he could see all six cylinder head temperatures.

I like Ronin's setup. I am doing thinking of doing similar with the aircraft MGL TC1.
I am just worried whether the sensor would work. I am also thinking of mounting the Sensor to the exhaust stud hole. 993s head have 2 extra holes. But don't know if that will give an accurate reading. |

Westach does mostly aircraft gauges. The price was very reasonable.

I may have one if anyone is interested. Its a single probe unit but works fine. Also have a EGT or two... course being an aircraft mechanic helps!

What about this one? Only $40 will give you digital display and user settable alarm.

I had them put two "Idjut Lites" in there as well. One for the belt failure sensor and CHT overheat warning. None have ever lit up except at start up.
They were surprisingly accomodating for my needs. The gauge was a little smaller than the clock but an extra gasket filled the hole and it hasn't moved. Not quite the match to the VDO gauges but close.

I installed an inline thermostat that had an adjustable reostat. I have it set at 400F.
It's kinda clunky but it works. I found an online wiring diagram. It's been in for a few years....out of site out of mind.

CHT Gauge solution
Here was a way I worked out a CHT gauge for my 66 912. As a sideline, I have been making a system for measuring CHT and other critical engine temperatures. There are many permutations of this "work in process"... some use a small external digital display that can be mounted anywhere on the dash, and for those not against some modification (which can be reversed back to stock) I make a display module that can install in the window of an existing gauge as shown in some of the photos. The "sensor" thermocouple is a ring that goes under the spark plug and indeed this can be a bit difficult to get placed just right as it is hard to "see" down into the recessed area in the cooling fins. But, I found with a little finesse, it is possible to position the sensor just right. I suppose mounting to a suitable bolt on the cylinder head is also a reasonable option. It is pretty interesting to watch cylinder head temps under various driving/load conditions. There's a lot going on in there!!
If you have interest in this approach, you can PM me and I'll send you more detailed info about my measurement system. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
