Adjusting the oil level gauge

My oil level sender was leaking. The old oil gasket looked like a piece of black coal. The new gasket fixed the leak, but now the oil level indicator is way low. It is shows just above the red when the dip stick shows right between the two marks. As I understand the only real adjustment is to bend the wire holding the float. My question is since the engine has to be at full temperature and idle to verify the level how much should I bend the wire that holds the float? I really don’t want to work on it when it is 190 degrees.

I tried to be careful when I replaced the gasket. Since the level was OK before I replaced I guess I will admit that I must have bent the float wire. I am guessing it is fairly sensitive to adjustment. How much to I bend it?
