3.2 Rain Tray

The rainy season is upon us here in Northern Ca.

I did my search and really didn't find anything. My problem is as follows;

I have to park my car outside at work (daliy driver). When it rains heavly during the day, water gets into the engine compartment and pools by the distributor. When I start the car, the water will get sucked up or wicked into the distributor causing a whole mess of arcing making it impossible to drive. I have to remove the cap and clean out the inside in order to get going. Doing this in the rain sucks!

Am I alone in this? Anybody else have this experience?

I was hoping to fab up some sort of tray/shield to divert the water away from the distributor. I didn't want to reinvent the wheel if somebody has already tackled this.

I did see a post regarding 911 512 109 01 (air guard) which is a special order form our host. I believe it's Euro only rain tray for the Carrera. Anyone with any experience with this part.

Open to any ideas.

Thanks in advance.
-W

I haven't tried it but I believe if you take special care to seal the bottom-edge of the OEM cap to the dizzy housing....and make sure the Beru-end connectors are good and water-tight, and use the black-plastic dizzy cover that is stock with the car..... there should be no problem.

John Walker/Walker's Workshop mentions seeing 3.2's with water problems during rainy season..... and may chime in for fix suggestions. I believe he's posted some.

Thanks Wil!

Sealing the bottom seems liek a solution. My plug ends are so tight that no water gets in them. Shoot, I can hardly get them off. Only the cap collects water. Duct Tape to the rescue.

Maybe create the lightest coating of dielectric grease sandwiched between the upper/outer surface of the dizzy cap and the underside of the black plastic shroud that fits on top of the dizzy?--->

One of the auto chemical companies makes a spray for this kind of thing. I used to have a Jaguar XJ6 with the dizzy on the side down low. No way could you drive thru standing water w/o stalling. That's one of the first things jag owners with Lucas electrics learn how to do, waterproof.

Google "ignition sealer." There are a few products out there still. Also Gibbs metal treatment will work. I think that's the stuff everyone was raving about because of the nano particle makeup of the compound.

W,
There have been several posts on this topic a while ago - I think one of them related to 912 water shields.
This one is in the parts cd around the 1980 mark - it has a part number and I suspect it was for the home market only.

HTH,
Dennis.

Hmm....looking at this watershield... and seeing that it "covers" the forward-most opening of the engine lid opening... leaves me with doubts. As the engine lid is lowered into position, it would seem the "open" portion is still directly above the distributor.

Even so....wouldn't you need drain tubing to catch and displace the accumulated water???

I also was wondering as I read this thread whether a 912 rain tray would work. I can see no reason why it wouldn't, and I know from experience that they work quite well. I think that the trays, however - at least ones in nice shape, and the associated mounting hardware - are on the scare side. Doesn't mean that they're not out there, though. One thing to look for with these things that the mounting holes in the tray - which is ABS or something similar - aren't broken out. Also, just a thought, I'm pretty sure that it would be simple to put together a set of the mounting hardware from outside sources. Probably can find a pic of the thing, and how it mounts, over at the 912 board.

I find something fundamentally wrong when the search for solutions bring us so far...to this point of "adding" a tray....

You mean....Porsche never tested these cars on the proving grounds or in "real world" conditions before setting them loose in the marketplace?

My view is to look at the integrity of the dizzy/dizzy cap/ wires .....for water-tightness.
