Sorry, I screwed up my post. What I'm trying to say is a shop nearby sells Amsoil 20W/50 ARO. I was wondering what the Zinc and Ph content is. When I search I get info which is a few years old. I know that the Amsiol Motorcycle Oil has high zinc & ph but, the label on this ARO says it good for motorcycles.

I'm thinking this is a good oil, Check with LN engineering to see if it's on there list.

Search for ultimate oil thread. Personally, I cant stand AMSOIL. They are the best ever, and they will tell you that until you're blue in the face, just like a car salesman.

They can be annoying!! However, they have some good stuff, like there oil filters, some of the best in the industry (micron rating, bypass construction).

On one Amsoil web page it lists 20W-50 containing 1270 zinc and 1150 Phosphorus. On another site it lists 1266 zinc and 1379 phosphorus. I talked to an Amsoil rep today and he stated the 1266 and 1379 number. This is what puzzles me about this oil.

The difference in the Z&P can be due to different weights or an older rating. I'd rather stick with a brand that is tested and approved by someone I trust that knows air-cooled Porsche engines.

Let's keep this thread going. A guy approached me at a gas station yesterday, asked all about my 993 and what kind of oil she drinks. He was an Amsoil salesman and handed me a catalog. I told him I was well-stocked on Mobil 1 15/50 for the next year, but that it was unobtanium around here and I'd be looking at alternatives as soon as I run out of stock. Is this stuff really good?

I've been using AMSOIL 20W50 in my '74 since 2006 and I'm very happy with it. Lower engine temps, which is nice!

What's a good price for 20/50 and is it full synthetic?

Found this on a web site. This is what amsoil puts out so...

ZDDP (Zinc) Levels for AMSOIL Motor Oils
Ok guys pretty hot subject about Zinc levels for our cars. So I have been doing some research to find out this information for AMSOIL Oils. Here is a quick look at what the levels are for a few of the oils AMSOIL offers.

All levels are ppm:

AMO 10w-40 Synthetic Premium Protection Motor Oil; Phosphorus 1265, Zinc 1378

ARO 20w-50 Synthetic Premium Protection Motor Oil; Phosphorus 1266, Zinc 1379

HDD Series 3000 Synthetic 5w-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil; Phosphorus 1266, Zinc 1379

AME 15w-40 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Motor Oil; Phosphorus 1267, Zinc 1377

RD20 Dominator Synthetic Racing Oil 5w-20; Phosphorus 1424, Zinc 1575

RD30 Dominator Synthetic Racing Oil 10w-30; Phosphorus 1424, Zinc 1575

RD50 Dominator Synthetic Racing Oil 15w-50; Phosphorus 1424, Zinc 1575

AHR SAE 60 Synthetic Super Heavy Weight Racing Oil; Phosphorus 1265, Zinc 1375

All of this information came straight out of the AMSOIL TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) Flat Tappet and Camshaft Lobe Lubrications. I have provided links back to each oil if you would like to look in to one a little closer and the TSB itself. If I can provide yall with any more information about products or anything AMSOIL offers please fill free to PM, Email or give me a call.

Thanks for your time and hope yall find this information helpful.

Are you guys seriously not aware of the ultimate oil thread on this forum? If not, do a search. You will find there are plenty of recommended oils listed there.

Yes, I am, but I thought we'd hear just from some Amsoil users on this one. On second thought, this stuff is stupid expensive. I got four 5 qt. jugs of Mobil 1 at a Wal-Mart in Vegas for $22 each, which is very reasonable and I go there about 4-5 times a year. I'll stick with that. My car still burns almost no oil at 74k miles and has only ever had Mobil 1 15/50.

I agree that the oil is OK, but that's just it, it's just OK. They claim to have the best of this or the best of that, when in reality oil formulation is all about balance. In motor oil, jacking up one characteristic, for example ZDDP, will shift the balance of the formulation enough to adversely affect the performance of the oil in other areas. This is why I hate Amsoil, they might tell you that they have the most ZDDP. Ok well how does the oil fare in maintaining it's stated viscosity over 5k miles? They might tell you that their oil produced the least amount of wear in a test engine. Ok, but how much build up did the engine see?

To me Amsoil is like the infomercial that comes on at 2 am, they can teach you how to be rich. Anyway, sorry for the rant. Like I said, i cant stand car salesman or Amsoil.

Rick, not sure that the M1 15w50 is recommended. I know for sure that the M1 20w50 is recommended, that's fully synthetic and about $10/ quart. Or you can get Brad-Penn 20w50 from Amazon for about $6/ quart, although this is conventional dino, not synthetic.

I switched to Amsoil 20W/50 ARO (was using Valvoline VR-1) and did notice that my oil pressure at start up is higher and also higher when hot. Especially at idle when the oil is hot.

I find that the Amsoil salesmen do irritate me a little, however, so did the Brad Penn's sales staff at Watkins Glen.

I believe the price was around $ 9.50 a qt.( as I bought 2 gallon jugs plus 2 qts.) and without shipping that brings it a little closer to Brad Penn.

Even if it's $ 25.00 more per oil change I feel it's worth it. As I often say, how many times we go out for dinner and spend $8.00 or $9.00 for a glass of wine when we could buy the whole bottle at Wal Mart for $10.00.

Mobil 1 20W50 V-Twin, CNavarro recommended, $8.99 per quart and plenty of ZDDP (1700/1600 listed on the site).

^^^ Picture is a link

The 15W50 Mobil 1 is 1200ppmP 1300ppmZ and is $7.66 per qt there. I use the V-twin, no affiliation with the site.

I have used Amsoil, and only Amsoil, in my SC since I purchased it in 2005.
I was using the Series 2000 racing oil, which is now the RD50 racing oil.
http://www.amsoil.com/lit/databulletins/g2570.pdf

For those who are unaware, and who didn't look at the other threads that discuss Amsoil (including the Ultimate Motor Oil thread) you should know that there are different types (classes) of synthetic oil.

AFAIK, Amsoil is the only one that uses Class IV Polyalphaolefin base oil.
The others (including Mobile 1)*, to keep price down, use Class III base stock - which is regular old mineral oil which has been hydrocracked. Group III base stocks are considered synthetic motor oil only in the United States; elsewhere they are not allowed to be marketed as "synthetic". This was due to a US court decision that a hydrocracked oil is not naturally occurring, and therefore is manmade (synthetic).

Full disclosure: I, like 'aftermath', am an Amsoil dealer.

*See the Ultimate Motor Oil thread for reference on the Mobile 1 statement above, or visit the B2B section of their website where the information is available. Or just Google.

Oil Prices ???

I'm amazed what people say they are paying for oil ! I just checked my latest receipt for BP 20-50 and I paid 3.42 per quart. That includes tax. Plenty of oil at Advance auto and Walmart is more expensive. I probably have 15 oil supply places in NC I can get BP at any day of the week. I try to pick up a couple or three cases once a year and I'm good. Call BP directly and ask who is the closest distributor, they sent me a list via e-mail for NC/SC.
