Trick for Removing Fan Controls from Dash?
 

The controller for my ventilation fan is no longer working so I need to remove it from the dash to troubleshoot it. I know there is a bolt on the forward bulkhead holding it in. Are there any tabs or anything else, or a trick to removing it without damaging the face or the trim? Also, are there any recommendations for dealing with the cables? I'm hoping that there will be enough slack that I will be able to disconnect them from the controller without disconnecting them from the fan or the vent valves.

there's not a lot of room to get it out easily. once the one bolt is out, work it to the left and try to get the right side to pass through the opening. it's a bit of a struggle. then if you have tiny little hands, there's a minute chance that you can disconnect the cables from the unit. otherwise, leave them connected and deal with them up front. not my favorite job.

Leave it in. Remove a seat and work laying on your back, head under the dash.
Worked for me. Very likely one of the cables got stuck / bend. Also don't forget to check the ground connection.

Thanks for the help, I got the control head out of the dash far enough that I could work on it. This thing had stopped working for the previous owner (my father-in-law), and his mechanic couldn't figure it out, so they cut all the wires and rigged up a toggle switch under the dash. It's been bugging me ever since I got the car.
I reconnected all the wires and cleaned up the contacts. They had 37 years worth of grime on them and so their electrical conductivity was greatly reduced. They were also worn away in some places. I had to bend the wiper a bit so it would hit a different spot. Now it all works like it should, even the light for the fan!

Man does that ever look like a PITA!!! I was kinda hoping to hear this was an easy fix. My fan works fine but the other two sliders are crap, they hardly move and won't stay in place when they are moved. It looks like getting that thing disconnected and out of the dash is gonna be a chore. :(

easy access to the slider control cables underneath dash by removing the druck press and tachometer-gages. you can easily put your hand in the opening in the dash to get to the cables. I also have to remove my control box, my cables are bent.

That control unit is a marvel of translational lever movement....... :D

Sabeo, my offer still stands to have whichever cables you need from my '79 racecar. Removed the control unit a few months ago and I have a bunch of good useable pieces stored in a box
